Aihole, considered as the Temple City, is situated on the banks of the Malaprabha River. This sacred place is home to around 125 ancient temples, dedicated to several deities.
Started in 450 AD and finished in 700 AD, construction of the temples took around 250 years. Out of all these temples, Shiva Temple, which was built in 450 AD, is considered as the oldest.
All these temples display a blend of Buddhist and Hindu styles of architecture. This place has several rock-cut caves that have been beautifully carved. A temple, dedicated to Goddess Durga, has a semicircular apse.
Some of the other major attractions of this place are The Konti Temple Complex, The two-storey Buddhist Temple, Hutchmalli Temple, Uma Maheshwari Temple, Ravalphadi Cave Temple and Jain Meguthi Temple.
