The Ajanta caves have some of the best specimens of religious cave painting in history and are recognized by UNESCO. It is located away from Jalgaon in Maharashtra. There are around 30 caves in Ajanta, with caves 9, 10, 19, 26 and 29 are ‘Chaitya-grihas’, while the rest are monasteries.
The caves were built as early as 2nd century BC and were excavated in AD 1819. The caves have intricate paintings that belong to the period of 2nd century BC, while some of them also belong to the 5th century AD. Most of the paintings display the great influence of Buddhist religion, revolving Buddha, several incidents of Buddha’s life, Bodhisattvas and the Jatakas. The paintings are mostly on a mud-plastered ground, using the tempera technique.
