Akshaya Vat

Patalpuri Temple and Akshaya Vat, both are located inside the Allahabad Fort. Patalpuri Temple, the underground temple is also one of the oldest temples in India. According to a legend it is believed that Lord Rama performed the panda daan for his forefathers in this temple. In addition, the temple also has a special mention in the travelogue of the Hiuen Tsang, a Chinese traveller who visited India in AD 644.

Akshaya Vat is also located within this fort, which is believed to be one of the most revered trees among the Hindus. This indestructible banyan tree is considered a sacred fig tree.  According to a legend, it is believed that once the sage Markandeya asked Lord Narayana to prove his divine power, In order to prove his power, he flooded the world for a moment, during which only this tree was standing erect above the water level.   Tourists wishing to visit this tree need to take permission from the Commandant of Allahabad Fort's Ordinance Depot.

Timing:  7 am – 5 pm
