The Allahabad Public Library is situated within the premises of the Chandra Shekhar Azad Park. Established in 1864, it is the oldest library in Allahabad. It was dedicated to the friendship of Lord Thornhill, the Commissioner and Mr. Mayne, the Collector of Allahabad and is also called the Thornhill and Mayne Memorial. Designed by R. Roskell Bayne, the building is also famous for its Gothic architectural style. The library has almost 75000 books apart from government publications and parliamentary papers, old manuscripts and journals.
