Allahabad University, also known as the University of Allahabad was the 4th modern University established in the country. Established on 23rd September 1887, it is one of the most popular universities in India. The university has managed to maintain it’s sound academic tradition along with several achievements to it’s credit, during the course of it’s history. Popularly known as the "Oxford of the East", the university began as an affiliating and examining body for graduate and Post-graduate degrees.
The university managed to carry the status till 1904, after which Allahabad University succeeded in establishing it’s teaching departments along with instituted doctoral research programs.
In 1951, the University recognised some local institutions as 'Associated Colleges', which were authorised to teach undergraduate courses. These courses were taught under the Faculties of Arts, Commerce, Science, and Law. In addition, after it’s reorganisation, the University earned national as well as international recognition as a premier institution.
Year 2004 was the most eventful year in the history of this institution. This was because; in this year a Bill was introduced in Parliament which proposed to recognise the University of Allahabad as an 'Institution of National Importance'. It also mentioned to restore the Central character of this University.
Sprawling over a large area, the university has a library which contains more than 1,50,000 volumes in total. Today, the Allahabad University offers courses in several different subjects such as Arts, Commerce, Law and Sciences.
