Alvartirunagari Temple is an important religious spot for Vaishnavites. It is situated about 100 km from Kanyakumari and 45 km from Thoothukkudi town of Thhothukkudi District.
Alvartirunagari Temple is considered one among the 108 ‘Divayadesam’ or sacred places of Vaishnavites. It is also considered to be the 8th Temple of ‘Navathirupathi’. The other temples included under ‘Navathirupathi’ are Srivaikundam, Natham, Thiruppulingudi, Perungulam (Thirukullanthai), Irattai Thiruppathi, Tholaivillimangalam, Then Thirupperai and Thirukolur.
Alvartirunagari Temple is dedicated to Lord Adhinathan or Adipiran. A shrine is also dedicated to Saint Nammalwar who authored hymns to Lord Adhinathan under a tamarind tree within the temple complex. It is believed that Saint Nammalwar attained spiritual enlightenment while sitting under this tamarind tree.
The Nadaswara, a musical wind instrument, of this temple is also unique as it is made of stone, instead of the wood of ‘Aacha’.
