It was a very good business trip to Shimla. Shimla as always is a pleasure to visit. Lot of shopping and eateries to suit all tastes and budget! The weather is good all year round and its a great place to walk around The Amber Hotel is very well located in the Ram Bazaar area. Its ideal for business travellers/ budget tourists. It is economical and it is quite walkable from the Victory Tunnel, old ISBT, the railway station and the Mall road. It is not approachable by car, so a coolie (khan as they are called in Shimla) has to be hired from the Cart road for taking luggage from where it is a walkable climb through Ram Bazaar. The reservations are quite informal and all you have to do is call up. They do not even ask for advance. It is not really a luxary hotel, but the rooms are well furnished and the staff is cooperative, honest and trustworthy. On countless times I left my laptop at the reception without a worry. An extra effort was made to give me an extra clean toilet as I had requested for the same on the telephone beforehand. Linen, though amply provided could be a little cleaner. The hotel has its own sweet shop so snacks and breakfast is no problem. Room service is prompt and hot food with lot of variety is available. In winters, heaters (a must in Shimla winters) are provided at an extra charge. The Mall road is a 10 minute uphill climb and Coffee House at Mall Road is an excellent option for a sumptuous and economical breakfast. All in all a good budget hotel for everyone.
We were there for the winter vacation from January 13 to January 15 for three days and two nights. To start with the hotel's location was very close to the ridge and the mall road. But the road leading to the hotel was quite steep and required a few calories. The hotel's receptionist was quite polite and provided rooms on the first floor facing the road. Though the rooms had some stinking smell as we entered, but then there was a room freshener to deal with that. The room was very clean; walls were well padded with cushions to keep the room warm. Hot water ran through the tap 24/7. They served tea in the mornings. And the room service was satisfactory. But yes it was situated in a busy street of street dwellers. But you hear none of the noises when you close the doors Then we hired a cab from the hotel personnel to go to Kufri, Nandehra. We came to the room in the evening, got fresh and headed to the mall road and ridge which is just a few steps away from the hotel up the hill. And the best part was night shopping in the mall road on a breezy winter evening. Ladies would love to shop as there were so many shops selling the local jewellery, and leather items. There were quite a few outlets selling local delicacies like momo's and tomato soup with bread crumbs. There was a hotel here near the clock tower on ridge ran by Michael tourism guys. There was also a booking office by. I advise to first check this hotel out if you are willing to go for Kullu and Manali. The next morning we headed to trek the Jakhoo Hill to have the darshan of hanuman temple which was about 2. 5 km from the hotel. It was a lifetime experience. My advice to the travellers is that if you are looking out for budget and looking to stay in and around ridge, mall road this is the perfect destination. The things I would do differently is that I would book sightseeing with rather than some local taxi. Reason being that they charge heavily and safety concerns in the ghat roads. And yes please carry your own towels and soap or shampoos because the things the hotel provides aren't advisable.
Stay at the hotel was good. Location was best and appearance of the hotel was fine. I booked my room there by phone service. I faced no problem during check-in and check-out timing. Staff services were excellent and on time. Rooms were neat and spacious. TV was available but fridge was not there. I took my meal in the hotel. Food was superb. Quality and quantity wise, it was good. They provided no cab facility for sightseeing. It was a relaxation trip. Shimla is a good place for other visitors. Hotel is recommendable for other visitors.
In October first week, I went to Shimla with my family on LTC. We tried to find some hotel near the ridge (top of the mall road) and we got Hotel Amber. It is near to the ridge but on a very sloppy street. The hotel looks good . The hotel room was small having a small screen size television. Other room facilities were normal. Timekeeping requires a bit improvement. The hotel restaurant food was nice and hygienic . . Staff behavior was nice and they were quick in responding our orders. They also advised and helped us on planning our trip. They also managed our travelling requirement as per the schedule . Overall, our trip was nice one. We could go for the same hotel again if we visits Shimla again.
