Amboli Hill Station lies in the vicinity of Sawantwadi, in the Sindhudurg region of Maharashtra and is situated at an average elevation of around 690 m above sea level. This place is the last hill resort, located just before the coastal plains of South India.
The hill station is believed to have been set up by Colonel Westrop, a British political agent. He also established the Ghat Road, from the coastal town of Vengurla, to increase tourism in the region. The hill station receives an annual rainfall of around 750 cm and is thus counted amongst the wettest places in Maharashtra.
Amboli, offering pleasant climatic conditions throughout the year, is one of the few hill stations of Maharashtra from where the sea can be seen. Places like the Nagarta Falls, Hiranyakeshi Temple, Hiranya Keshi, Mahadev Gad and Narayan Gad are visited by tourists on their way to Amboli.
