About Anamudi Peak (Hill)

voted as clean

Being the highest peak in the Western Ghats and in South India, the Anamudi Peak is located in the pleasant hill station of Munnar in the Eravikulam National Park of the Kerala state. It has a topographic prominence of 2,479 metres. ‘Anamudi’ refers to – elephant’s forehead. It is named after this because the mountain literally looks like an elephant’s forehead. This peak is home to Asian Elephants, Gaurs and the rare Nilgiri Tahrs.

The peak is prominent for the Neela Kurinji flowers which bloom every twelve years. What is remarkably beautiful to watch from here is the Vaigai and Thamirabarani Rivers flowing eastward and the Periyar River flowing into the Arabian Sea. Trekkers fall in love with this place because it gives one a satisfying experience like never before. A lot of wildlife, cultivation of spices and water bodies can be seen from the peak. The sunrise is a treat to the eyes and words will not suffice to explain the beauty of it

There are no separate charges that one will have to pay after entering the Eravikulam National Park, though entry is sometimes restricted due to weather conditions. The finest time to visit this gorgeous place in God’s own country would be from November to May. The best possible way to get there is by road.

"Beautiful place with a small trek"

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted Jan 4, 2017
The place is located at really located at top of Munnar, Bus service is available at the entrance of the park to the peak.
There is a small museum at the peak which tells a little history about the place and species of animals and the flowers that can be found there. You can walk along the park to enjoy the view, the view from the top is breath taking.
You have to purchase ticket at the entrance of the park and get the bus to the top, spend some quality time exploring the flora and the fauna and take a bus back again to the entrance of the park. The last bus that goes from peak to the park entrance is around 6:30.
Great place for photography.

Can't wait to visit the Anamudi Peak. I can't express my passion on this place. It is the best peak in Kerala. The best time to visit there is day time. The natural beauty can't be described with my words, only we can experience it.

"Just amazing to be on the tallest peak in South India"

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted Sep 8, 2015
Anamudi Peak, the 2, 700 meters high mountain is believed to be the highest point in India outside the Himalayan Mountain Ranges. The peak is in the Eravikulam National Park and is home to one of the largest surviving populations of Asian Elephants, Gaurs and the Nilgiri Tahrs. The mountain, covered with evergreen forests and inhabited by endemic flora and fauna and a vibrant avian life, is a paradise in the wild. The green forest is also the source of some large and scenic rivers in Kerala and the nearby State of Tamil Nadu. We started from the entrance to the Eravikulam National Park on the bus plying between through the zigzag road to the National Park. On reaching the last point, we had to walk and the view, the cool breeze and the blowing mist was astounding. We all felt bit difficult to breathe when we reached a highland where we can see green meadows, rocks and a pond. It was difficult to go up to the mountaintop and we had to turn back to catch the last bus leaving.

"Really scenic beauty"

Anamudi peak in the Eravikulam National Park is the highest peak in south India. Drive up to the hilltop is little scary by the park's vehicle but it is worth going. Surrounded by tea gardens and Nilgiri Tahr the views are just amazing. We really feel that we can touch the cloud. Must visit for every tourists.
