Anjanwale Fort

Anjanwale Fort, also known as Gopalgad Fort, is located on the top of the mountain in the state of Maharashtra. Possessing rich historical importance, the fort has witnessed the rise and fall of the Maratha Kingdom during mediaeval period. The fort is believed to be constructed by the Bijapur rulers in the 16th century and was captured by Shivaji Maharaj in 1660.

The fort was transferred to many rulers during mediaeval period out of which, Siddi Khairat Khan, Tuloji Angre and the British are the prominent. After the death of Shivaji Maharaj in 1680, the huge fort was acquired by Siddi Khairat Khan in 1699. Tuloji Angre captured the fort in 1744 and brought it back to the Maratha Kingdom. This period is also called the ruling period of the Peshwas. With the fall of Maratha Empire in 1818, the fort went in the hands of the British and remained with them until India got its independence in 1947.

Covering an area of around 7 acres, the fort is segmented into two units out of which, the lower part of the fort walls is called Padkot while the upper walls are referred to as, Balekot. In order to offer protection to the fort, strong fort walls comprising 12 Burujs were  constructed. Tourists can enter the fort by two main entrance gates, which lie on its east and west. Premises of the fort are adorned with thick bushes and mango trees. Besides this, various structures such as the killdeer's residence, three wells and small as well as big fountains are also present inside the fort.
