Archaeological Museum

The Archaeological Museum was established by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in 1964. This museum is situated within the premises of the Convent of St. Francis of Assisi. The convent was closed in 1864, but the museum is still operational. This museum holds displays of a wide collection of sculptures representing Goa before the arrival of the Portuguese.

This museum has eight galleries, each of which exhibit sculptures and portraits from many centuries back. On the first floor of the museum, portraits of Portuguese Governors can be seen. The statue of Portuguese Illusory Alfonse Albuquerque is one of the most popular exhibits here along with portraits of other governors, all seen in their official dresses.

The portrait of Vasco da Gama is a remarkable piece in the entire collection of paintings. The museum has sculptures of Hindu deities, Sati and hero stones, along with antiques from the period of the Hindu rule in the region. The museum also exhibits various types of Portuguese arms, such as rifles, swords and daggers. Ancient maps, coins, bronze statues, ceramics, stamps, Palaeolithic tools and wooden sculptures are also showcased in the museum.
