Arulmigu Balasubramanya Temple, a 2000 years old temple, is situated on the banks of the Varaha River in Periyakulam. A six-headed idol of Lord Murugan along with the statue of his wife is enshrined in the temple.
As per legends, King Rajendra Chola unknowingly killed a pig as he saw it suckling the younger pigs. Later, he saw Lord Murugan feeding the hungry piglets. After this incidence, he built this temple which is believed to share a status equivalent to Kasi.
