Ashta Lakshmi Temple is one of the famous temples in Chennai. The Ashta Lakshmi Temple of Chennai, situated towards the southern end of Elliot’s Beach, is one of the two Ashta Lakshmi temples in India, the other being in Hyderabad.

The Ashta Lakshmi Temple of Chennai, built in 1976, is dedicated to eight forms of Sri Lakshmi who are the symbols of power, wealth and health. The eight manifestations of Goddess Lakshmi are Santaana Lakshmi, Gaja Lakshmi, Dhana Lakshmi, Dhaanya Lakshmi, Vijaya Lakshmi, Dhairya Lakshmi, Adi Lakshmi and Vidya Lakshmi.

There are also minor shrines dedicated to Lord Guruvayurappan, Lord Ganapathi and Lord Hanuman within the chief temple complex.

The architecture of the temple exhibits a blend of ancient Dravidian and contemporary style of temple architecture. The temple has five inner rows, which have elaborate stone carvings. The eight shrines dedicated to Ashta Lakshmi can be found scattered within these five tiers along with minor deities.

Navratri, Deepavali and Pongal are the main festivals held at Ashta Lakshmi Temple during which devotees offer special prayers.

"Morning is the best time to visit"

  • 6.5/7
  • Posted Apr 19, 2016
Temple is ideally located near the Marina beach. From outside temple looks very simple, but very good once you enter inside. Temple is in ground and first floor and shouldn't miss that as the entrance to the first floor is very small and we may miss that. It was very hot when we visited in April, but once you enter 1st floor breeze is soo cool and it may be due to the architecture of the building. Good time to visit is in the morning.

"Second visit"

  • 4.5/7
  • Posted Aug 27, 2015
This is my second visit for the same place. First time I visited there in 2011. Religious temple located on the bank of the sea. Very good place to visit. Situation of the temple is good. Get peace of mind and also in the heart. Very good religious atmosphere in the whole campus. Advisable to visit there. I think is the first temple in India like this type where all the devis (Laxmi) live together.

"All arrangements are done for tourist"

  • 7.0/7

The Ashtalakshmi temple is in the sea shore. Goddess Lakshmi in eight forms are worshipped there. All arrangements are there for tourists. But the cleanliness near the area is not upto the mark. Provision for adequate purchasing is also there.

This Ashtalakshmi Temple is a nice one to move out with. The special feature is that, in order to worship the deity you need to go to the top with the help of the stairs.
