Attirala is considered as a sacred region and is situated to the east of the banks of the Cheyyeru River. The epic Mahabharata has mentioned the act of Sankha and Likhita, and has also described the holiness of the Cheyyeru River. Initially, the site was known by the names Hatyarala and Yethirevula.
The region is regarded as the centre for the Vedic culture. It is believed that the Cheyyeru River absolved Parasurama from his sins. According to legends, the Parasurama Temple was once considered as a Buddhist Vidya Kendra and was initially owned by the Saivas. During its occupation by the Vaishnavas, this area was formed as the Parasurama Kshetra.
Travellers can view a hall with 72 pillars to the south of the temple. There are two renowned temples of Thretheswara and Gadhadara located to the east of the temple. Because of the existence of the Gadhadara Temple and the Cheyyeru River near the site, Attirala is regarded sacred. Devotees can also visit the Parasurama Kshetra which is famous for its beautiful sculptures. On the top of the Thretheswara Temple, a Jyothistamba is found which sparkles during the festivals.
