Banasura Hill Resort, Wayanad
Vellamunda, Wayanad, Kerala 670731
Spent 5 nights at the resort. We stayed in the earth rooms which was lovely and very comfortable. The place is set in a serene environment with mountains around. The dinning room is set in a quiet and beautiful location which has view of the forest like place. The food is excellent and served a variety of dishes for every meal both indian and western but we preferred indian and specially Kerala specialities. The entire team was always courteous and helpful throughout our stay. Special note for the dinning staff with whom we interacted more than others were extremely warm and helpful. Was a pleasure to have hindi speaking staff who were very friendly and serviable. The activities proposed was very good and flexible to change to our suggestions. We did the alkali caves & nature walks which was real great & memorable. The local guide Ravi was very knowledgeable and good during the nature walks. Internet connectivity wasn't as good but the staff tried their best to provide alternative solution. We found the stay very comfortable and relaxing. We appreciated that the resort is not very big as it still gave a sense of warmth of the place and people. We will recommend the place to all friends who want to visit Wayanad. We ourselves got recommended from a friend who had already spent 3 nights with her family.
This is truly an Eco Resort. We, a couple spent 3 nights at their mud cottage. It gives a very earthy feeling which we have rarely experienced. The place is extremely neat and luxurious. The cottages are pretty spacious. We found the lighting in the cottage a bit dim, but I believe that goes with the architecture. The food and service was excellent. They have 2 cooks Vinod and Deepak. Vinod specialises in South Indian category, whereas Deepak is a North Indian. So we got to eat a whole lot of variety. As we had visited them on a weekday and there was only one more family staying, in spite of that they cooked the entire spread which was ravishing. Ever smiling Ravi escorted us on the walks to the waterfall and the stream. Their Manager Mr. Joby and the entire staff were very courteous and helpful. Mr. Joby was very informative and kind enough to arrange for our sightseeing. A special thanks to the entire team for making our stay a memorable one. Came back feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. Will definitely visit again. Banasura Hill Resort nature and hospitality at it's best.
Really awesome I cant express my emotions while using these keys. Each moments we are satisfied. Its too long a ride from Kalpetta to this place. Before reaching here we are totally upset. Our trip was a flop if we don't stayed here. That much we impressed and fallen here. About Ambiance: A real heaven. Everything is soil made. Amazing and classical creation from the architect. 7/7 rating About Food: Still that taste stuck in our tongue. Delicious!! 7/7 rating About Service : Manager and his crew done a great job. No words!! 7/7 rating Water Falls and stream inside the resort was mind blowing we can feel the coolness of divine nature and its ecstasy! Every thing is natural. Will reach there again. No negatives!! LOVE LOVE LOVE
We went as family with my kid and my mother. We checked in on Thursday (April 2015) and stayed for three nights for summer trip. About the resort: We had limited choice the time we started booking vacation and landed up here after going through some reviews. This resort is located in an excavation (or man-made pit or slope) which is said to be in an small hill or elevated village - all together facing the Banasura mountains in the background. Mind this background mountain is a bigger one situated at a distance and it can be seen through other places of Wayanad. Scenic beauty portrayed in web picture can be seen as such in many other places too. Service and property : Location is nice and stay is comfortable. More spacious rooms. Rooms are well maintained, clean and tidy. Provided extra fold-able cot and bed for my mom. Staff are courteous and very concerned. They opted to serve food to my mother if she finds difficult to walk in night times. Amenities : There is a fan but no AC in all rooms I think (not an issue we know it before and climate is manageable). The LED TV is too small for that big room its almost size of our desktop monitors (guess 21-22 inches). Outside the room- veranda areas are also large and spacious. We could sit anywhere for chat and have tea. Outside the building the walking area is very narrow, some are slippery - also covered by small to medium plants and bushes. Be cautious for both kids and old people. There is no swimming pool. Reading room, with TT, carom boards and indoor play area is there above the Dining hall. There is no kids play area either covered /uncovered. There is no specific garden area where u can spend sometime. There is no birds (ducks or turkey). There is no all time ayurvedic service (its on prior appointment basis somebody from outside will come). Dining and food : All have limited options AP/MAP plan or order separately. Food and servicing is good and tasty. They manage and try to provide multi cuisine with Kerala style, north Indian and Chinese dishes with fruits, juices and non-veg. They provide tea with biscuits for all room guests in fixed time. Otherwise we have to order. Location and access : This property is definitely difficult to locate. We proceeded from TN through Ooty and Gudalur. After Sultan Bathery we need assistance. Though we took printout of map (as some reviews said GPS will not work all time) and hotel staff also guided through phone calls - its very very difficult and tiring to travel after Sultan Bathery ( almost 65 km to reach property) with extra 10-15 km of few wrong direction from local people). Its definite local people even if you reach Vellamunda were unaware of the property name and address. You find only two name boards (2. 5 x 1 feet)size of the resort at 3 km and at resort entrance. Its pathetic we drove our car passing the resort (since it is situated in excavation no building will be visible if the front wooden gates are closed ) we drove 1. 0 km past the property into the hill and called staff for help. Since we checked in at weekdays there is no cars in supposed parking areas which also has no visible boards. Its high time they keep adequate sign boards and name boards at parkings and property entrance at-least. We expected at-least the entrance will be having big gate or arch with name return prominently. They have a hide and seek attitude and careless about self driving guests coming for first time. That too no barrier / sign board for the road past the property which belong to Government forest areas. Its accessible for Bangalorians and definitely tedious for self driving travellers through Gudalur, Sultan Bathery route. Overall stay : If you want to stay away from busy towns and city, and to have a lonely feel without any activities to eat and rest in peace this is a ok place. No nearby restaurants or food outlets. Local sightseeing : out of house, waterfall near the property is worth to visit for single time (approx <1 km from property). Nearby tea estate will have leaches beware. Tipu hideout are waste. For other Wayanad sightseeing you have to travel 30 km past or being Jeep arranged by staff. Banasura dam - boating is available though some restoration activities going on. Everybody forced to take speed boats because KTDC people ask visitors to come as 20 member group to take bigger economical boats. Pookode lake is good looking and has a picnic experience but there also KTDC people said 4 hr waiting time for any type of boats. Only 5 to 6 self pedal boats are plying. For us its worth visiting other places of Kerala (eg. Alapuzza or Thekkady). If you are interested in trekking without much tourist friendly spots - Wayanad will be a choice. This Banasura Hill Resort is idle and good for staying away from crowd and sightseeing.
Had been to this resort mid April 2015 for our anniversary. Stayed for a couple of days. The location is excellent, right on the foot hills of Banasura hill. The road to the resort was extremely bad. But we had hired a jeep and it was pretty adventurous getting there during dark. People with smaller cars might find it difficult getting to the resort. There's very few sign boards en route directing you. So make sure you have GPS with you. We had booked in to a log hut. The room was very spacious and was very neat. Had all the standard amenities like TV, fridge, toiletries, etc. There was a lot of wood used in the interiors and I liked it very much. But, although the log hut did give us some amount of privacy, we felt it was not worth the extra cost we paid as compared to the earth rooms. Not sure if it was due to the specific room we got right next to the earth rooms. Maybe the rooms farther off are better. You might have a few insects (bugs, spiders) visiting you during the evening. Especially during wet seasons. It didn't bother us much, so it was not a big issue. If it does start to worry you, feel free to ask the housekeeping staff to check and clear them out. Also make sure there's nothing inside your shoes the next day morning before wearing it :) We tried only vegetarian food and it was OK. Not out of the world or anything, but pretty decent. Although they do a la carte, it's probably cheaper opting for the buffet. The staff was very courteous and always available for your needs. The only hiccup we faced was with getting our ride to Kalpetta to board our bus back to Bangalore. We had asked reception to arrange a vehicle. When it was time, we were told to wait for 30 mins (looked like they forgot). Got us worried about missing our bus. If you need a vehicle arranged, you might want to keep checking with them once in a while so you can leave on time. The resort as a whole is very beautiful and as far as ambiance is concerned, you feel very close to nature. Fresh air, sounds of insects/birds, tranquillity, fantastic. Drizzle in the air added to the charm. There was a complimentary trek (or walk) provided by the resort. They take you through their tea plantations upto a small stream. Takes about an hour or two max to cover this activity. What would I have different next time? 1. Book an earth room. 2. A trek to Banasura hill.
