About Bandel Church (Place of Worship)

Bandel Church was built in 1599 by Captain Pedro Tavares. This church was established by Christians, who already outnumbered the Hindus by 1598. By the mid 16th century the Portuguese used Bandel as a port.

The original building of the church was burnt down by the Moors in 1632 during the sacking of Hooghly. Gomez de Soto built a new church on the same site in 1660. The keystone of the older church can still be seen along the eastern gate of the church. It has three altars, several tombstones, an organ and a shrine of Mary.

"A quick plan for a short trip"

  • 5.0/7
  • Posted Nov 22, 2016
Suddenly we made a plan to bandel, an hour distance from Kolkata by train. At station we completed our break first and caught auto to visit oldest church in Bengal. Eye soothing beauty brought peace in mind. There we took toto to visit historic imambara. Sun clock, prayer hall, biggest clock tower made me feel big history is hidden in small town. MostFrom of us don't know about those. After that we went to bansberia by toto. There is Hangseshwari temple has a unique architectural style. There are thirteen minars, each shaped like a lotus bud, and the inner layout follows the human anatomy. As we reach before 12 we got bhog (for lunch). Nearby The Ananta Vasudeva temple is constructed in the traditional ekaratna style with curved cornices and an octagonal tower. We missed out Zafar Khan Ghazi Mosque and Dargah situated at Tribeni. Anyway from bansberia station we took train. Otherwise could go adi saptagram station by toto to catch a train. We enjoyed a lot. Its a memorable journey in a short time. Thank.

"Ancient Church"

It's a very good place to spent out a day with your friends over family. Going to this place has many ways but easy to go by train or bus. There you can see some scenic beauty. Inside the Church you feel the unnatural silence.

"Ideal to visit during Christmas"

  • 5.0/7
  • Posted Nov 19, 2015
This is ideal to visit when it is all decked up for the Christmas. The old church is all lit up and decorated during the Christmas and there is a large number of people visiting this place during the season. Enjoy the carol and some wine and cake as you spend the Christmas morning.

"A church truly reminds of Christ and the European architecture"

  • 7.0/7
  • Posted May 24, 2015
The ambience and the structure of the church is that of the Roman architecture. This is the only church in whole India to house such great infrastructure and housing an European ambience. People from all over the world visit this place and after all, who wouldn't want to touch their souls with the love of Christ. He died on the cross for our sins just because he loved us.
