Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva on a hilltop

This is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva on a hilltop...You can either trek from Kullu itself or go up a small road in a vehicle which leaves you to trek a short distance like 2.5kms...It takes nearly 1- 2 hours...Once u get there, you get magnificent with views all around, located as it is on the top of a hill. There are steep gorges and valleys around coupled with clear views which leaves you wonder struck. On top of that, when you listen to the legend associated with the temple, you can do nothing but only bow down to the Almighty..Travelling during the monsoons it can become quite cloudy very quickly and visibility drops precipitously. You can easily drop down a gorge unless you are very careful. There is a fair during the Hindu month of Shravan... As elderly people can't walk much, travelling by cars is advisable...Must Visit this place even once in a life...Food is available

Temple located on hill with scenic view

It's just an awesome place in kullu. It takes approx 9-10 hours road trip from chandigarh to reach there and then followed by a moderate trek of 3 km. There are few small shops on the way and top of hill where you can get cold drinks, chips and hot noodles. It is at a height of 7500 feets. The temperature is a lower on top than ground and also you can experiance cold winds. The place is too scenic as the shiva temple is located at the top most end of the hill and you will get a clear view of whole kullu valley. There are few rest rooms for visitors near temple.

Heritage temple and a place with magnificent views

I visited Lord Bijli Mahadev on 16 June 2015. The road from Kullu leads through villages with apple orchards. As I drove through the hilly road in my car, I got magnificent views of Kullu. Finally, I reached the point where there was no road and the trekking began. It involves climbing a large number of stairs. The overall distance from the car parking to the temple of the Lord was about 5 km and it took about 1.5 h for me to reach the temple. It is a good exercise and if the body is not in good condition for climbing stairs, it will take a long time. I saw some people abandoning their trek. However, the trek was rewarding. The day was sunny. I felt a great bliss after reaching the temple of Lord Bijli Mahadeb. There is a long pole through which electric signal from thunder passes to the phallus symbolizing the mighty Lord, which breaks into pieces. The broken units are then restored by using butter, etc. This phenomenon occurs once in a while. Apart from the place, I got a good view of the surrounding valley. There are some stalls on the top of the hill for snacks and garments. I completed the to and fro trek and snacks in 2.5 h.

Bijli Mahadev

Visit to Temple- Bijlee Mahadev (Lord Shiva) where Lightning Strikes Every YearHimachal Pradesh, a beautiful state of India, also known as Dev Bhoomi i.e. Land of Gods where one can find thousands of stories of Hindu deity. And one of the places is KULLU.Last summer, I got a chance to visit this incredible place. My eyes were wide open to see huge rocky mountain, lush greens and river Bias.In Kullu I came across a historical / mythological place called Bijlee Mahadev i.e. Temple of Lord that Electrifies, with an amazing story of lightning behind it.This temple is situated at height at 3476 Ft. and only way to reach there is Trekking. The way to Bijlee Mahadev is via thick forest full of deodar trees. Even wild animals are there, so it is not advisable to stay back at temple after dark. The temple itself is build with huge cut stones & unique wood work. The most amazing part is that SHIV LINGAM is made of home-made butter. The whole year priest keeps covering layers of butter and surprisingly at a particular period in year lightning strikes the temple and the Lingam is broken into pieces. Again people start making the Lingam and whole process is repeated year on. In winters, this place is fully covered with snow and visitors are not allowed to visit this temple. Once can have a magnificent view of the THREE valleys from this place (top of hill) i.e. Bhuntar, Manikaran and Manali. Once can also view run way of airport and planes taking off and landing at strip.Amazing part: Lightning strikes at the same point year by year and faith of people making Lingam every year, year by year. This butter in hundreds of Kgs. is being donated by villagers around.
