Indian Botanical Gardens of Kolkata is the haven for nature lovers, where they are innumerable species of flora, amidst the natural habitat for the growth and development. Located in the suburban area of Shibpur, in the Howrah District, the Indian Botanical Gardens was established originally in 1786.

Botanical Gardens was conceptualized by Colonel Kyd, which houses nearly 12,000 plants and dried out plant specimen of about 2.5 million. These specimens have been collected from various parts of the world. This is the oldest Indian botanical garden and has a wing that works on the development of tea that grows in Darjeeling and Assam.

Tourists can also see a wide collection of trees and rare plant species from Brazil, Nepal, Java, Penang and Sumatra. A house of rare Orchids inside this garden covered by Cuban Palm avenues and very tall Mahogany trees can also be found. There are Tamarind and Mango trees providing shade to the grass lawns stretched throughout the garden.

The purpose of this garden was to foster the production of various species of native plants. The main attraction of this garden is a renowned Banyan Tree, which is assumed to be the oldest Banyan tree in the world. It covers an area of 404 sq. m, and has a huge circumference of 330m. In the year 1945, the main trunk of this tree was removed as it got infected, but all its supporting branches that are about 1573, lend support to the tree.

"Place to hangout if you have time"

  • 3.5/7
  • Posted Mar 31, 2016
Our cab driver first took us to this botanical garden. He told to visit the Banyan tree which was very old. We paid ticket price and even paid for digital camera. We did not have any idea on what is there inside the garden for us to view, while we were already running late. We roamed around for 45 minutes and did not find any banyan tree.

There was no one around to guide us. Couples were roaming around and some where just walking. We were cursing our driver who suggested this place and time as well as money got wasted just for doing nothing. We did not get any good clicks either. The first place that we visited disappointed us.

This place is good to visit only if one has time and knows what to check inside. We were just lost inside the garden and wasted time. I do not recommend this place. Instead other places are more attractive and good.

The greenery takes over all the concrete as you enter the place. A lovers hotspot, visit this destination if you are inclined to know about some exotic plants. This garden is also a storehouse of the oldest Banyan tree as a part of the excitement.

"Beautiful Garden and the great Banyan Tree"

  • 5.0/7
  • Posted Oct 31, 2015
The Botanical Gardens are open from 8:00-16:00 every day; we took a taxi reach here within half an hour as the distance is very less from Kolkata. And it costs Rs. 200 Kolkata one way. Paid Entry Fee of Rs. 10 per person and still Camera Rs. 20. It looked more like a Forest than a Botanical Garden. The plants and trees out there had no information on them to know about the significance. Those which had were too old to read. The park is truly enormous and is a wonderful place to spend hours walking the paths and enjoying greenery so near the city. Sadly, it's not on par with any other botanical gardens around the world with regard to maintenance, ease of movement around, and general aesthetic.

We see the Great Banyan Tree, largest in the world, (Used to read in books, where the Great Banyan Tree, the biggest in the world is, you can't even know which was the original trunk when you sit under it. ) and we did enjoy that part. We also enjoyed the beautifully shaded walks around the park. However, some areas were poorly maintained, full of trash and choking weeds or the terrible signage and lack of maps. There was no arrangement of proper security and safety. There was no proper arrangement of toilets. There were no right arrangements of land-markings and route-markings. The highlight of the garden is undoubtedly the Great Banyan Tree, 250 years old and with a network of roots and branches so extensive it looks more like groove than tree at this point - this alone is worth the ticket price. The garden remains hardly ever crowded, making them among the few places in Calcutta one can enjoy some solitude. There was a Flower garden which hardly has any flower. Also Boating can be done there. There are thousands of varieties of plants and trees that you cannot finish seeing in one day.

Also you are not allowed to carry any plastic inside nor bottled water.

"Nice place but poorly maintained"

  • 4.0/7
  • Posted Jul 29, 2015
The place has a lot to offer with its long walkways and vast tree shades. But the maintenance is not upto the mark. There is charge for camera including mobile cameras. So even if you are taking an old VGA camera phone, you have to pay for it. It has the famous banyan tree.

"Hundred years old banyan tree without main root"

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted Apr 11, 2014
The title of my review really justifies the review. Botanical Garden is popular for the banyan tree which is hundreds of years old and the main root can not be identified any more. It is a huge garden with so many species of plants and trees.
