The total square area of the park must me more than 100 hectares. Not to forget we enjoyed the boating too. This place is easily accessible from town it is at Howrah.

"Hundred years old banyan tree without main root"

  • 6.00/7
  • Posted 3 months ago
The title of my review really justifies the review. Botanical Garden is popular for the banyan tree which is hundreds of years old and the main root can not be identified any more. It is a huge garden with so many species of plants and trees.

This botanical gardens is known mainly for the giant banyan tree. But there are a lot many more attractions there. The area of the garden is very vast and it exhibits a wide variety of rare plants spread over 109 hectares.

"Away from the crowd of the city."

  • 5.00/7
  • Posted Oct 8, 2013
It's nothing but a simple park full of trees away from the crowd, pollution and noise of the city. As soon as you enter the park you can feel the temperature different!! You can only see the trees. The park is so big that you will get lost in a while. The park has a small lake inside where boating facility is also available. The lake is full of lotus plant and flowers which make the lake look even more beautiful. The park has a very old banyan tree and it is said that you can't find the main root of the banyan tree, that's the most interesting part of the park!!

Indian Botanical Gardens of Kolkata is the haven for nature lovers, where they are innumerable species of flora, amidst the natural habitat for the growth and development. Located in the suburban area of Shibpur, in the Howrah District, the Indian Botanical Gardens was established originally in 1786.

Botanical Gardens was conceptualized by Colonel Kyd, which houses nearly 12,000 plants and dried out plant specimen of about 2.5 million. These specimens have been collected from various parts of the world. This is the oldest Indian botanical garden and has a wing that works on the development of tea that grows in Darjeeling and Assam.

Tourists can also see a wide collection of trees and rare plant species from Brazil, Nepal, Java, Penang and Sumatra. A house of rare Orchids inside this garden covered by Cuban Palm avenues and very tall Mahogany trees can also be found. There are Tamarind and Mango trees providing shade to the grass lawns stretched throughout the garden.

The purpose of this garden was to foster the production of various species of native plants. The main attraction of this garden is a renowned Banyan Tree, which is assumed to be the oldest Banyan tree in the world. It covers an area of 404 sq. m, and has a huge circumference of 330m. In the year 1945, the main trunk of this tree was removed as it got infected, but all its supporting branches that are about 1573, lend support to the tree.
