Botanical Garden is the most famous tourist destination in Ooty. In 1847, Marquis of Tweedale laid the foundation of this garden, which is spread at an area of 22 hectares. This garden is located at a height of 2400 metres above the sea level and has a collection of rare coloured lilies, flowering trees and shrubs.

There are many rare species of trees, one of which is 20 million year old fossil tree. It has earned the sobriquet monkey’s puzzle tree because monkeys cannot climb this tree. Furthermore, there is an Italian style garden which has a huge variety of flowers, bushes and plants. The garden, which also has a clear pool and a fern house, is popular among students specialising in botany.

The Horticulture Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu looks after the maintenance of this garden. This garden features variegated range of roses and imported shrubs. Todas or the tribes of Nilgiri, which is known for its unique culture and traditional values, inhabit the eastern hill of this garden.

Botanical Garden is famous for its ‘Summer Festivals’, which is held every year in the month of May. In the third weekend of May, a flower show and exhibition on plants is organised in this garden.

"Nothing much to see and waste to time"

Big land area, but noting attracting to watch for what we pay as entry fee. No variety plant spacious. Poor Sales counter with hardly countable plants to buy. No sign board at the entrance showing the map of the garden and places to visit inside.
The glass house is in extreme bad condition and authorities keeping visitors away saying the ceiling glass can fall any time.
Ensure you carry sufficient water as you cannot get the same inside as its plastic free zone

"Ooty trip"

You need minimum 2 hours to complete whole Garden, you will have good landscapes with hill places, it is advisable if you haveThe garden was good and worth visiting for all. Flowering plants with lots of varieties. They do sell rose plants and other variety of plants at very low cost of Rs 15 per piece. But unfortunately most of the places they were preparing for the upcoming second season starting from October and hence we find little disappointed with minimum choice. The entry charge is Rs 30 per person and for camera they charge Rs 50.

"A big garden"

  • 5.0/7
  • Posted Aug 26, 2016
Botanical Garden is a big garden and I felt that the maintenance is not great since it is an off season time. They have a few benches near to entrance and they don't allow you to sit and take photos or even enter the fenced big grounds.
You can have a nice walk around the park, climb places and it is a good place to take photos with nature around you.
The chocolates are cheap and good in here. They are homemade chocolates sold by TTDC.

Definitely it will take 3 to 4 hours of time to see everything. In my point of view this is the main place to visit in Ooty. But you have to walk a lot.

This is the garden one can say is comparable to gardens of overseas countries. This garden resembles the Royal Botanical Gardens of Edinburgh. As per Indian standards, this garden cleanliness is well maintained, beautiful flowers and trees.
