Named after Brahmagiri peak, the highest point, the Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Western Ghats, in the Coorg district of Karnataka. Established in 1974, it is bordered by the Wayanad district of Kerala in the south and in the east it almost mingles with the Nagarhole National Park. There are two reserve forests in the sanctuary – Brahmagiri and Urty through which the River Borapole passes.
Some of the animal species which can be spotted at the park include lion-tailed macaque, elephant, gaur, tiger, sloth bear, wild pig, spotted deer, Nilgiri langur and several others. The 240-odd bird species include emerald dove, black bulbul, Malabar trogon etc. Reptiles like python and king cobra can also be seen.
The vegetation of the sanctuary consists mostly of evergreen and semi-evergreen forests along with bamboos and patches of shola forest. Bird safaris and jungle safaris are available at the sanctuary and it is also an ideal place for trekking and climbing.
