Cellular Jail, also known as Kala Pani, was constructed in 1906 by British Government. Located at Port Blair, the jail acquired the name cellular, as it entirely made up of individual cells. These cells were meant for the solitary confinement of the prisoners. This jail was used by the Britishers to exile political prisoners to a remote archipelago. Several famous rebels along with freedom fighters have been imprisoned in this jail. These include some of the well known figures such as Sukhdev, Bhagat Singh, Jaidev Kapoor, Rajguru, Batukeshwar and Dr. Gaya Prasad.
The building of the jail comprises seven wings, all of them were scrutinised from a central watchtower. In addition, the jail also has a large bell, which is rung in case of any emergency. Each wing in this jail had three storeys, which consist of total of 698 cells. The dimension of each cell is 4.5 metre x 2.7 metre and also had a ventilator fixed at a height of 3 metre.
The prison has now been declared a National Memorial. In addition, visitors can also enjoy light and sound show in Hindi as well as in English during evening. The place also comprises a museum, a photo gallery and an art gallery as well.
