About Chamera Lake

The Chamera Lake, located in Chamba District, is a popular tourist spot of Himachal Pradesh. Located at a distance of 25 km from Dalhousie, at an altitude of 1700 m, Chamera Lake is a reservoir formed by the Chamera Dam. Being a major source of water supply for the villages surrounding the lake and continuously fed by the Ravi River, the water levels in the lake ranges at an average of 750 m.
Nestled in a valley in the midst of pine forests, the lake is an excellent site for activities like fishing, angling and boating. Himachal Pradesh Tourism department has built a boat house adjacent to the lake which has facilities for water sports like river rafting, motor boating, canoeing, and kayaking. Other than the water sport activities, pedal boats and rowing boats are also available for the tourists.
The Chamera Hydel Electric Project, one of the main hydel projects of Himachal Pradesh, is situated nearby.
Chamera Lake, though located in the midst of dense forests, is well connected by roads making it easy to reach the place.
Other tourist spots near Chamera Lake include the Bhandal Valley and the Bhalei temple.

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted Jun 30, 2017
First time experience of speed boating. Charges are too much but enjoyed lot. Rs. 400 per person for 8 minutes.

Motor boats for 30 minutes are also available. Mountains around the lake are ultimate.

Must go.

"Something to view - on large scale"

  • 4.5/7

Just had a glimpse of the lake from atop a hill. Nice place, very huge with clean water. Its water generates electricity - its on the way. Boating is done - but did not see anybody doing so.

"Lake with awesome boating experience"

  • 7.0/7
  • Posted Feb 11, 2017
Chamera lake is formed where 2 rivers meet up, raabi and seul. The lake is still and it's in the Chamba region. Boating is available for the tourists and it's the popular spot among the tourists. Chamera lake is around 35 km from Dalhousie. Small eateries are present and a lone cafe which was closed when we went. The water is clear and blue. Very relaxing place and boating is 350 per head and it's real good experience as it's a huge lake. Life jackets provisions is available.

This place is heaven on earth very calm and relaxing, and also soothing for eyes. You can do boating here. Rates for 30 minutes are exorbitant but overall good environment.

"Nice place but rates are high for boat rides"

  • 5.0/7
  • Posted Oct 21, 2015
There is nothing much to do except boating in Chamera Lake. Charges are 300 per person and 200 per child (below 10 years) for less than 30 minutes duration with motor boat which seems to be a bit high. I could not see any options for ordinary boats available. I will say it could be great if there would be ordinary boats available. Nice to visit and take pictures. Also there is not any place where you can sit and enjoy except one small restaurant.

Its worth to go there and take a boat ride it's amazing place for taking stills and videos you have to hire boat for group are small boat for 2 persons. In winter you must carry some snacks, water and muffler because it's windy here. Tea stall and other small outlets you get there.

"A rainy boat ride at Chamera Dam"

  • 5.5/7
  • Posted Apr 23, 2015
This dam is one of the known places to visit when you are in Dalhousie and is about 30 kms away from it. The main attraction here is the boat rides which include a one hour normal boat ride or a 10 minute speed boat ride.

Nearby there's a small restaurant where you can get tea/coffee and some snacks like momos. Outside however there are main stalls selling different things. A good place to visit especially if you enjoy boating.
