The small hilly district of Chamoli is known for its historical, cultural, geographical and mostly religious importance. Nestled in the Himalayan range, Chamoli is ideal place for nature lovers and is known to have been inspiration to poet like Kalidas. The snow-clad mountains, the rivers and various pilgrimages make this place suitable for pilgrims, nature lovers and adventurists. Chamoli’s district headquarters is Gopeshwar located at an elevation of 1308 m.
This place is associated with many gods and goddesses of Hindu mythology. Chamoli is home to the popular pilgrimage spot of the Hindus, Badrinath and Auli Bugyal. About hundred shrines of Lord Shiva, like the three shrines of Panch Kedar out of the total of five and three of Panch Badri out of the total five are situated here. The entire valley of Chamoli takes on a floral look during the monsoon season and makes this place a “Valley of flowers”.
Chamoli is a spiritual place that has many legendary stories associated with it. It is believed that to breathe life into lifeless Laxman, the Sanjeevani herb was found here by Hanuman. Even the epic Mahabharata is said to have been wriiten here by Ved Vyas. Guru Gobind Singh is also said to have meditated in Chamoli. This place is bordered on all sides by districts of Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Almora, Uttarkashi, Ptihoragarh, Pauri Garhwal and Tibet on its north, providing interesting trekking opportunities in this region.
