The Changu Lake, which is located at an altitude of 12,310 feet on the Gangtok Nathu La highway, is a popular tourist attraction. The literal meaning of the name of the lake in Bhutia language is 'source of the lake'. This one kilometre long and 15 metres deep lake is considered sacred by the local people. During the winter season, this lake remains frozen.
Near the lake lies the Alpine Forest that is inhabited by several animals like red-panda and Brahminy ducks. Tourists visiting this lake can see numerous beautiful flowers like rhododendrons, primulas along with blue and yellow poppies, especially during the months of May to August.
Foreign tourists are not permitted to visit this beautiful lake. For Indian nationals, an Inner Line Permit (ILP) is required as this lake is a part of the restricted area.
