Candolim Beach which is
situated in north Goa roughly begins from the Fort
Aguada till it merges with Calangute
beach, making it one of the longest beaches in Goa.
In addition o that, the beach is very calm and peaceful, devoid of many shacks
and shops clamored with tourists.
Close to Fort Aguada
lies the Chapel of St Lawrence dedicated to the patron saint of sailors and
arguably enjoying the most advantageous location of all Goa Chapels. The
dome-shaped chapel built in 1668 has its feast day on August 10. It is
said that before the day of St Lawrence nobody expects to see a sail on the
horizon, because it is monsoon; but with the break of dawn one can see the vessels
of the sea which have been lying anchored during the monsoon getting themselves
ready to leave. It is because of this reason that the church faces the sea. The
churchyard is packed with curious people, the sailors make their calculations
by scanning the horizon, and the pious and spiritual souls fulfill and make
their vows on this occasion. While youre here look around for a beautiful
mansion here by the name of Placio Aguada against the sea, as you can take a
beautiful picture of it from the chapel. |
