Chapora Fort is just 10 km from Mapusa and is situated on a hilltop which is opposite to the Chapora Beach. This fort was built by Adil Shah of Bijapur, south of the Chapora River. The fort is situated on the route to Shapur Village and is often referred to as the Shapur Fort.
The fort is approximately 500 years old and was built to protect the people of Bardez from the attacks of Marathas. During the Portuguese colonial rule, this fort was annexed by them from Muslim rulers. Portuguese built the red laterite bastion and crowned the rock bluff in 1617.
From this fort, travellers can see the Anjuna Beach, Mandarem Beach and Morjim Beach. Few scenes of a popular Hindi movie, 'Dil Chahta Hai', were shot at the Chapora Fort.
