Hyderabad Sightseeing - Charminar

Charminar usually tops the wish list of most visitors to Hyderabad. Standing majestically amidst the hustle and bustle of the crowded old city, the Charminar is an enormous yet elegant arch, a masterpiece of the bygone Qutub Shahi era.

Often called 'The Arc de triomphe of the East', this beautiful colossus in granite, lime and mortar was at one time the heart of the city.

Legend has it that this imposing monument was built by Sultan Muhammed Quli Qutub Shah in honour of his Hindu Wife, Bhagmati in 1591, soon after he shifted his capital from Golconda to Hyderabad.  Some also believe that the monument was built to mark the exit of a deadly epidemic from Hyderabad.

Charminar gets its name from its Char or four intricately carved Minar or minarets. The massive structure stands on a square base and opens up to four directions through grand arches. The first floor has beautiful balconies which affords a fantastic view of the historic city. The beautifully illuminated structure looks spectacular by night.

Small restaurants sell piping hot cups of tea and Irani samosas.  The adventurous should sample some famed Hyderabadi delicacies like the Dum ka Biryani, Luqmi and Haleem.

The bustling bazaars of Shahali Banda, Laad Bazar, Kali Kaman and Patthar Gatti that embrace the Charminar sell colourful bangles, pearls, intricately embroidered dresses and sarees. Discerning Hyderabadis prefer to shop at Charminar where excellent quality is available at wholesale prices.
