Lucknow Sightseeing - Chattar Manzil

The Chattar Manzil, also known as the Umbrella Palace, is an example of a very unique and different style of architecture. Construction was started by the Nawab of Lucknow, Ghazi-ud-din Haider, and it was completed by his son Nasir-ud-din Haider.  

The large and imposing building has enormous underground rooms and a dome surmounted by a gilt umbrella. Though the Chattar Manzil retains an old world charm, it also contains elements of European architecture, proving it was influenced by the modern style of architecture of Europe. This sort of synthesis in the old and modern style of architecture was fast becoming the trend and helped to further enhance the beauty of the buildings, with the best of the old and new being incorporated to get the best output. The most prominent feature of this grand structure is the umbrella-shaped dome from which it has derived its name.

Today, the Chattar Manzil has been remodelled to serve as an office for the Central Drug Research Institute. While on a trip to Lucknow, tourists must visit the Chattar Manzil to see this magnificent example of genius architecture.
