Peaceful resort; decent variety of food available

5.8/7
Posted 8 Jul, 2014

Cherrapunjee Holiday Resort is a family run nature resort in Cherrapunjee, Meghalaya comprising of two abodes (one new, one old). It is surrounded by captivating hills with their amazing flora and fauna, gurgling waterfalls and streams, a quaint village, lovely church and friendly people and standing in front of it on a June morning watching clouds floating over hills and the countryside I understood why Meghalaya is called the abode of clouds! As the heavy non stop rains lashed the countryside in the evening and throughout the night I experienced what the wettest place on earth was like! But the next morning, the clouds cleared up, the surrounding countryside was lit by sunlight and we could see rainbows in places . I had the opportunity of interacting with the owner Dennis and his equally helpful and courteous son Joel both of whom made our holiday a success. We were two women travelling alone but never felt uncomfortable out here. Dennis and Joel helped us with valuable guidance to see the amazing living bridges. He also fixed up a car for us and our driving guide Buntei showed us the amazingly beautiful countryside of Cherrapunjee including the caves, waterfalls and views of Bangladesh! The centre of the resort building had a sprawling dining area decorated with local artefacts, and enough room to hold a music and dance programme by local artists in the evening. It also had a library, TV and computer with internet. Our room had a double bed, an extra bed on the side, an attached bathroom and an amazing view of the mountains through the windows. There was a small office next to it and the kitchen beyond. They offered a decent variety of both continental, Indian, and local Khasi food. The resort is very neat and clean and maintained by a team of mainly local ladies dressed in Khasi uniforms. They were pleasant and courteous and greeted us warmly with a glass of water whenever we came back from an outing. My advice to travellers would be to carry their rain gear, shoes, torches and dress in comfortable cotton clothes as it can get hot and sweaty during the day. Don't use your cell phone when you get strong Bangladesh signal as this may incur international roaming rates. Please do not litter the beautiful, clean countryside with rubbish and be tried not to destroy the topsoil! The resort is very quiet and peaceful and the right place to be in if one wants to see nature in all its glory !.

A conviniently located neat and tidy hotel

5.6/7
Posted 21 Jul, 2015

A serene place located 18 kms ahead of Cherrapunjee town. A property ideal for nature lovers for its isolated location away from the maddening crowd away from the hustle bustle of city. Ideally located to make base for the treks ahead. Neat and tidy place maintained well. I stayed in a executive room no TV, but didn't feel the need of one. Standard rooms are available at cheaper rates. The drive down to the property is pleasant and thrilling specially the last leg, the sign postings are not legible, but can manage otherwise with little difficulty. There is ample space for car parking. The staff are cordial and are with a smile on their faces always. Ever ready to help and guide when needed. They arrange guides and travel plan Tours if needed for camping, trekking, angling etc. The trek to the one and only double decker root bridge is worth exploring. The trek is scenic, tiring but enjoyable. The hotel owner helps with maps, guides, etc. The food specially the local cuisine are tasty and very palatable. A homely feeling what we got. A place worth staying if you are on a family vacation or on vacation with your friends. Definitely, always carry things that you can't live without for the duration of stay. Light woolens, torch lights, mosquito repellants, first aids and raincoat/umbrellas would be handy.

Surrounded by waterfalls and mountains

5.9/7
Posted 30 Jun, 2014

I made a relaxing family trip sometime in May-June 2010. The location of the hotel was very beautiful which was outside the city. In the entire Cherrapunjee there were 5 such resorts in the open area. There may be other accommodation in that area. I had no problem because I had a vehicle. This hotel was one of the most beautiful ones among others overlooking waterfalls besides hillocks. Actually, it was a family run guest house. Rooms were good with all amenities. Normal food was provided and it was good. Faced no problem at check in and check out. This resort was on top of a hillock surrounded by mountains. No activities but a small garden in front of the resort where swing was available for the children. I got value for money for this trip. I recommend this hotel to other travellers as this hotel being the best among others. I am from Kolkata.

Small resort but quite cosy

5.8/7
Posted 24 Nov, 2014

We have stayed there for 2 nights. Its small yet cosy resort and provides basic rooms to the travellers. The place is neat and clean. All the rooms are open into the dining hall and the place somehow in-stills a community togetherness felling. The owners are very helpful and will guide on which places to visit. They also arrange for local guides to accompany for treks to the living root bridges, each room has a folder which provided details insights about the place and its people, old stories and also lists the various treks and activities possible in that area. Food is good and usually there is performance by local boys in the evening.

A perfect holiday away from city life

6.3/7
Posted 15 Oct, 2015

Even though Cherrapunjee holiday resort is not a luxury hotel but it will steal your heart with its simplicity and hospitality. This has a look of a family run hotel with very cordial and helpful staff. Though the rooms are very simple with basic amenities, we didn't bother as we were mostly out exploring the place or enjoying the beauty from the open lawn. The food is good and is cooked fresh. They organise live music in the evening which is so amazing. With Khasi boys singing in English, Hindi and Khasi language, this was just wow. All the guest joined for the show, clapped and danced with the crew In the evening, one can take a walk around the resort and visit villages nearby. The cleanliness and warmness of people will make you fall in love with this place. Every house is so well built and has rainwater harvesting technologies. People are very simple and loving I would recommend this hotel also for the journey from Cherrapunjee. Apparently this hotel is 18 km away from Cherrapunjee. The drive is simply out of the world. Our car was lost in the cloud and I was half outside the window of our taxi. The road is spotless the view is mesmerizing. We were really missing our car as we wanted to stop at every turn as the view was incredible.

It was an amazing stay with good services

5.1/7
Posted 17 Sep, 2015

I like to call this the guardian of the living root bridge. This is one of the best places to stay if you are looking for some walks, looking to sit out in the lawn and enjoy the beautiful sunset far across the plains of Bangladesh in the horizon over a cup of tea. Rooms are good and very comfortable. Family run, so has a very homely atmosphere. Life music to encourage the local talents is always a treat. Food is great, and service are on a personal level leaving one quite satisfied.

Foreigner's stay, not for Aam Aadmi

3.6/7
Posted 8 Jan, 2014

The place is 15 KM away from city, just above a small village named Lakinsew something like that. So for food you have to depend on them only. And that is the pain. If you ask for one plate potato fry(Aloo Bhaja) costs rs - 90 not sufficient for two. If you ask for a mixed vegetable you cannot find anything except the gravy. Always attention service to the foreigners because they are having khichri by paying 130 rs not sufficient for one person. First day when we reached there, someone came and told us to join a musical program that has been organized by them. When we received the bill, there was an entry music fee - rs 100. During our stay a boy aged 10-12 said that I am going to seat at bonfire, may be that has also been charged by them.

Nice location; guides available for trekking routes

6.9/7
Posted 18 Aug, 2014

This is a good location from where you can go for trekking with guides and this place itself is in a forest. There are single and double trekking routes. The staff were very helpful, but the food is very expensive. From the rooms you can see a village on top of the hill and other hills at a distance. Everything in this hotel was good. The booking was done over the phone. There was no delay or problem at check in and check out. The hotel people provide all kinds of assistance to the tourists. The rooms were small, neat and clean, including the washroom. The veg and non-veg food that was good was served. Playing arena, internet and WiFi, small library was available in this hotel. I travelled to this place with my family for trekking in August 2014. I am speaking from Guwahati.

Beyond our expectations....haven\'t experienced such a personal touch since a long time. Homely yet highly efficient service with more than a handful of intellect. The family owning the hotel are your hosts...they make u feel more like their private guests. And oh boy!! if there is anything to be known about Cherrapunjee, Mr Rayan (our host) knows it and not only that, he is ever eager to share it with you. Going around the central lounge itself you gain lots of knowledge from the elaborately explained wall hangings. And the view from the lawn is just fantastic!! you can see the waterfalls as well as the plains of Bangladesh. Not to forget the lovely butterflies and a host of picture perfect insects you can see first hand as well as the lovely guitar band of the local Khasi boys who entertain yo in the evening with the rain peltering down the tin roof and gusts of clouds entering through the wide open doorway...just heavenly!!! Thanks Mr Rayan for the memorable experience.

Overall experience in the hotel was excellent

5.9/7
Posted 2 Jan, 2015

The overall experience in this hotel was excellent. The management of the hotel was good. The hotel was far from the city so it was not so conveniently located. The bus stand and railway station was also very far from the hotel. The surrounding of the hotel was beautiful and natural. The interior and exterior of the hotel were very maintained. The service was excellent and the behaviour of the staff was also very nice. The room allotted to me was very good. It was spacious, neat, clean and maintained. We had a beautiful view from the room. All the amenities like TV, AC and geyser was provided in the room. The washroom was also neat and clean. All the time cold and hot water facility were provided. We had food in the hotel and it was tasty and hygienic. They provided both Veg and Non-Veg food with many varieties. The price of the food was reasonable. We didn't face any issue while check in and checkout process. The hotel conducted many extra activities for tourists. We were happy and satisfied with the hotel and it was value for money. I would like to recommend this hotel to other travellers. My suggestion is that they should provide transportation facility. I went there with my family for relaxation purpose.

Mr. Denis Rayen, the owner of Cherrapunjee Holiday Resort, ensures that one starts living one’s vacation from the time one lands on his homepage…. and I am not exaggerating. Believe me…. there is a LOT of relevant information available ! Mr. Rayen himself is so accessible (mail/phone) that I felt I knew him personally even before I embarked on my journey. I did all my research, information gathering and bookings when I was not even in India ! The overall experience ?? I am sure to visit Cherrapunjee Holiday Resort again. ….and maybe again ….
