Benaulim Sightseeing - Church of St John the Baptist

On Colva road, at the far end of the village situated atop a hill is the Church of St. John the Baptist. Built in 1581, the church is a classic example of Goan architecture. The church has a mannerist frontage and its interiors are made out of unstained Italian marble. The twin balustrade towers in four distinct tiers surround the facade and the central pedimental gable is capped by finials and spires. A fire destroyed the church in 1784, but it was later rebuilt and restored. 

On the arrival of the monsoon, Feast of St John the Baptist (Sao Joao) is celebrated as a thanksgiving. Wearing crowns of leaves and fruits, young men tour the village singing for gifts. To commemorate the movement of St John when he was in his mother's womb and visited by Mary, the mother of Jesus, the young men of this village jump in the wells.
