About Coronation Bridge, Siliguri

voted as clean
The Coronation Bridge is one of the glorious designs left behind by the Colonial era in its British architectural style. Its design belongs to the British era in India, and it is artisanship is par excellence. It was named as Coronation Bridge to commemorate the coronation of King George VI in 1937. It is also called as Sevoke Bridge and was built for linking the North Eastern territory to West Bengal in the year 1930. Coronation Bridge is also called Baghpool and Lohapul by locals.
For the nature lovers there is plenty of foliage and lusting greenery to relish, the non-polluted atmosphere and clear waters at the Teesta River is an added attraction at this refreshing picnic spot. One can enjoy the beauty of the lush nature at Darjeeling as well from here.
The bridge was built according to the Reinforced Concrete system. As it was impossible to build the bridge on the Teesta riverbed due to its depth and strong currents of water, the Coronation Bridge was strengthened by a fixed arch, which had its ends fixed on rock surface on both sides of the river.
The Coronation Bridge is easily accessible as the National Highway 31 runs across it.

"A symbolic Bridge"

  • 5.5/7
  • Posted Mar 27, 2014
The Coronation bridge really stands as a magnificent structure and it is a symbolic bridge in North India. It is newly painted in pink colour and looks great from far. Anyone proceeding to Sikkim, Darjeeling or Dooars region by road will see this bridge and people proceeding to Dooars will have to cross this bridge. Do not miss to take a snap of it.
