About Dal Lake

Dal lake, one of the most beautiful lakes in India, is the second largest lake of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Encircled by mountains on three sides, the banks of this lake are adorned by several blooming gardens and orchards. Some of the main features of this lake include five basins and numerable channels, which are well linked with each other.

With a size of 6 km by 3 km, the embankments of this lake also house plenty of Mughal monuments along with the campus of University of Kashmir. In addition, the lake has two hillocks that house the popular shrine of Shankaracharya along with Hari Parbat Temple.

The lake is also known for its Shikaras and Houseboats for which it is visited by number of tourists. The Shikaras available at the lake provide travellers with ferry rides to and from the banks to the houseboats.

Divided into four parts by causeways, namely Gagribal, Lokut Dal, Bod Dal and Nagi, the lake is also the second largest industry of fishing. It is believed that Dal Lake originated from the Pleistocene Oligotrophic Lake, which at some point of time covered the Kashmir valley.

"Wonderful place to navigate in shikara" new review

  • 7.00/7
  • Posted 2 weeks ago
Never seen such a big lake, from houses to shopping market, to crops and vegetables everything on water wonderful place. The trip takes about 1-2 hour where you will be on shikara for navigation and if one is interested you can also take a night stay on house boats, the houseboats are really a luxury place with carved wooden walls and fixtures.

"Never miss the shikara ride" new review

A short ride in Dal lake in a small boat called shikara ride is one of the best tourist attraction. You will see moving markets, bazaars in dal lake. If you are planning for a shopping in Srinagar, Dal lake, Meena bazar is one of the best places for handmade goods. Its comparatively cheaper there and you will get the best stuff.

"Awesome place to boat and stay overnight" new review

  • 6.00/7
  • Posted 4 weeks ago
The lake is very pleasant and provides a very silent atmosphere. There is boating available, its really good. You would get almost everything from food to dresses inside the lake while you do boating. All are floating shops, there are houseboats also where you can stay overnight. Its a very nice experience. At night time the place becomes more awesome.

Love this, it really touched me. Fantastic commentary, informative and amusing, this is the easiest way to see all you want, believe me, leave the car behind. Want to go next time when my holidays come. The nature forces me within myself. I really feel the wave.

"Worth going"

Was nice to see around, worth an experience. It was getting late, dark and with mosquitoes coming our way- it was little sad to see the kind of experience it offers today. But still its worth going on and settling on a calm boat for a view.

It was a beautiful experience, the water is still by the day and dancing in the evening. Its a nice place to have a shikara ride. Nice romantic shikara ride, Please do not purchase anything during the shikara ride as they are really expensive & not worth but if you like please go ahead.
