Dal Lake is a small water body, which is one of the sightseeing attractions of McLeodganj. The beautiful lake stands at an altitude of 1,775 m above sea level, situated close to Tota Rani. In the midst of deodar, pines and oak trees, this attraction is one of the prominent picnic spots in the destination.

Moreover, there is a shrine of Lord Shiva in proximity to religious significance. The greenish lake is home for various species of fish. Hill tribes such as Girths and Gorkhas host a fair at the site in every August and September.

"Not worth seeing"

  • 3.0/7
  • Posted Jun 19, 2016
It is a pond like lake where there is no cleanliness and no scenic beauty. Just area covered with hills and a small Lord Shiva temple nearby. No boats or sign of boating. Just to visit passing by this side.

"Avoid this place"

  • 1.0/7

Its very bad experience here because nothing good here, not a clean place, no construction. Avoid this place. This place just a formality. If you want to burn your time then go to this place.

"Good place to visit only in Winter time"

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted Mar 8, 2016
This is a good place but only in time of Winter when the water level of lake is high. The water is not so clear but you can track along side of lake, but it on upper dharamshala side and good for outing with family.

"Small Lake above McLeodganj"

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted Jan 31, 2016
One can take a Auto rickshaw to visit place around Dharamshala. One of them being Dal Lake above McLeodganj in the hills. Peaceful place but does not live up to the hype created by the guides.

  • 4.0/7
  • Posted Jan 1, 2016
In my day visit there. Roads are not good at all. Scenic view is good but Lake is not 100% neat and clean. Small Lake. No facilities for boating etc and I have not seen. Overall good and we enjoyed the tour. Just you see and there are no activities. But there is a Lake in the top of the hill.

"The view of Dal lake is awesome with deodar trees around"

  • 5.0/7
  • Posted Nov 19, 2015
The lake surrounded by deodar trees is awesome. When clouds come down, the view is breathtaking. The boating facilities needs to be improved, more number of boats should be there.

"Stinking water in the lake"

  • 2.0/7
  • Posted Oct 27, 2015
Visited the lake, it was just like Yamuna in Delhi. No one cleans the lake and there is no point going there. It has just the mosquitoes and dirty water. No point visiting this place and wasting your time. There are better places to visit.

This is a lake which has a very attractive and pleasant climate. Especially the view of sun setting make you feel refreshed. The must and sure visit place if you are visiting McLeodganj and Dharamshala.

"Beautiful Surroundings in the Dal LakeŁ"

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted Sep 15, 2015
This Lake is situated at a very beautiful location, surrounded by countless Deodar (Deodar or the Divine tree in Sanskrit) trees. It is majestic & offers peace & joy if you are open to receiving it.

I have read all sorts of reviews it. Many people say it's a dirty lake, a mud-puddle & so on but my view is different. This lake's has greenish water & yes, it sometimes looks brown too but that doesn't make it a mud-puddle.

It has a Shiva Temple nearby, hence, considered a sacred spot. There is a famous festival celebrated here to offer love & devotion to Lord Shiva in the month of September every year. A lot of tourists visit this place at that time to be a part of the festival.

There is a school called the "Tibetan Children's Village" a few meters away. It was started by H. H. Dalai Lama 54 years ago in order to provide care for the many children who had been orphaned or separated from their families during the arduous escape from their homeland back in 1950s.

You can also talk with the head there in case you wish to volunteer. I wish I could have more time to spend there & visit each class. Mine was a very short visit but next time (2-3 years) I am going to spend good 3-4 hours there & be a part of the children and do a photo essay on the schoo

"Nothing much to see so please avoid"

  • 3.0/7
  • Posted Aug 30, 2015
Nothing much to see. Just a small pond where you can peddle boat. You could avoid this place if you are coming to Dharamsala for 2-3 days since there are several other good places to see.

In case you do end up coming to this place, check this out. There is a Ram Mandir opposite this Lake. Walk few steps behind this Ram Mandir to get awesome view of mountains.
