Dal Lake remains crowded throughout the year and is popularly known for its houseboats and Shikaras. This lake covers an area of about 26 sq. km. and has a long shore line of approximately 15.5 km. It is divided intro four different sections that are connected through four causeways and can be reached easily from the city of Srinagar. It is an ideal site in the region for enjoying swimming, kayaking, houseboats, canoeing, angling, Shikara riding and water surfing.

This place is regarded as the summer capital of the state of Jammu and Kashmir and is the second largest lake in the state. It is popularly called as 'Srinagar's Jewel' or 'Jewel in the crown of Kashmir'. This place is also ideal for fishing along with water plant harvesting. During the winter season, the temperature at the destination reaches about -110 Celsius, which freezes the Dal Lake.

"Heaven on earth" new review

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted 2 weeks ago
It is one of the best places in the world as so it justifies it's given title as heaven on earth. It's the really a great scenic beauty and house boats are like garland but the authorities must have taken care of the great lake but not done. The quality of water is not so good as used to be. You can see floating markets nehru park char chinar on the way. I recommend all my friends to visit here.

The lake has a beautiful surrounds . You can just drive the car or walk around it to enjoy the serene views of nature. Shikara ride is a must try if you are in Kashmir. Experience The tranquillity, the peace, it's truly mesmerizing. People selling kababs, jewelry, artifacts, flowers etc in the nearby Shikaras. Visit the floating market and see the amazing colours of Kashmir . The fountains in the middle or the ducks scattered allover or the dhows moving around. It was a real beauty.

"Huge Lake with abundant boats & houseboats"

  • 7.0/7
  • Posted 2 months ago
We did the Shikara ride on the Dal lake in winter and it was freezing! Do make sure to cover yourselves well, although the boatmen provide blankets to you. You can negotiate the time and the associated costs with the boatmen before starting your trip. While on the boat, the annoying part is lot of sellers approach you in their boats trying to sell jewellry, food items, photos etc. The views of the mountains from the boat are breathtaking.

"If there is paradise on earth it's kashmir"

Its the most beautiful place I have ever seen. The lake has snow covered mountains in the background. Its a mesmerizing view.
The boulevard road which is around the Dal lake is like a road in fairy tails with zabarwan mountain on the sides and the greenery. And then is the houseboats in the lake. You gotta stay in one of those houseboats. Those are awesome.
You can ride in Adhikari in Dal lake and enjoy the clear water.

Kashmir has remained one of the favorite honeymoon places in India for a very long time now and Srinagar proves why this has been so. A shikararide in the Dal Lake in the evening is just enough to set the mood. Visit the colourful Maugham gardens and fill your honeymoon with truckloads of romance! A visit to the meadows is just like cherry on top! To truly understand and experience the magic of Kashmir, you need to visit it because it cannot be described in just words, no matter what.

"Dal lake -You can feel the magic in the air !!"

  • 7.0/7
  • Posted Oct 1, 2017
Located in Srinagar, it's also known as 'Jewel in the Crown of Kashmir '.
Located in the foothills of Shankaracharya Hill, its a magical setting in itself.
Dal lake, houseboats, shikaras, I must tell you they are Love, a big LOVE.
Dal lake lies in the heart of Kashmir, about 7 kms away from airport.
Shikara provide the water taxi service to approach the houseboats as well as for the rides in the lake.
The time you step down on the shikara - the sparkling lake, deep green shadows all around - You can feel the magic in the air !!
Nicknamed as Floating Palace ' - A houseboat is made of antique cedar wood. It's a proper house floating in water but still at a place. It was so lavishly furnished- Kashmiri carpet drawn on the floor, traditional curtains, seats, ceiling, everything was so ethnic and antique.
Houseboat has normally around 3 to 6 rooms. Many of them have lavishing verandas with soft cushioned seats and patio at the entrance with full lake in front of your eyes that looks so inviting.
Shikara
Also known as "Gondola of Kashmir"
It's small, paddled wooden boat, about 15 feet long used for multiple purposes.
They have heavily cushioned seats, a canopy and backrests to provide comfort in Maugham style.
You just want to sail as long as you can on such a snug boat.
Shikara ride
A Cultural symbol of Kashmir.
For every time we just sat in our Maharani (yes, it's the name of the shikara), it would start raining. It was an unestablished connection. The reflections of the colored boats on the surface of the clear water while sailing soothes your eyes.
Everywhere you look, you will see a new shade of blue- hues you never knew existed in shades prettier than the other.
Other things to see
1. Nehru park
Dal lake has its very own park in the center of the lake. There are some eating hubs there, with a lot of photographers asking you to get photos clicked in the traditional Kashmiri style.
2. Char Chinar
Small island on Dal where 4 Chinar trees stand still.
3. Floating market
Second largest floating market of world after that of Venice. You get everything here from the Kashmiri shawls, hand looms, sweaters, gloves, dry fruits, handicraft items everything you want.
4. Floating garden
Called as 'Rad' in Kashmiri.
They are matted vegetation, which of floating. Tomatoes, cucumber and melons commonly grow here.
Mornings at the lake
You get a new zest for life as the morning breeze blows over the mountains and Dal lake.
There's not much better in life than
A new morning,
A hot cup of tea,
And A great view of Dal lake.
Stay in the heritage houseboat
Heaven is a little closer in a home on a houseboat.
Away from all the hustle and bustle of the busy city of Srinagar,
Peace is not found in a calmer storm, it's found in a houseboat.
Remember that
A heart at peace gives life to a body ..
And a day spent on the water is never waste of time
Shells sink,
Dreams float,
Life's good,
On a houseboat ..
I'm really jealous of all those people would live on the shores of the Dal lake.
From the sun kissed water, to the snow capped mountains- everything warms the spirit.
Best part of people on the lake
The lakes culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of it's people.
Beauty of this region is - Everyone's passionate about what they do.
There could be no other perfect way to end our tour.
We visited as many places as we could in our 6 days trip
But this one was a total winner.

"Nice lake to enjoy around"

  • 7.0/7
  • Posted Aug 30, 2017
It is a very big lake in the Srinagar city. It has many options in terms of boathouses to enjoy the lake and nature to the fullest. It has small Mobile shops on boats only which is altogether a different experience. The Chinar trees in the middle also provides an enchanting view.
The nearby shops on the roads also provide good food, the local kashmiri food can be tried.
Happy Holidaying !!
Warm Regards
