Dal Lake remains crowded throughout the year and is popularly known for its houseboats and Shikaras. This lake covers an area of about 26 sq. km. and has a long shore line of approximately 15.5 km. It is divided intro four different sections that are connected through four causeways and can be reached easily from the city of Srinagar. It is an ideal site in the region for enjoying swimming, kayaking, houseboats, canoeing, angling, Shikara riding and water surfing.

This place is regarded as the summer capital of the state of Jammu and Kashmir and is the second largest lake in the state. It is popularly called as 'Srinagar's Jewel' or 'Jewel in the crown of Kashmir'. This place is also ideal for fishing along with water plant harvesting. During the winter season, the temperature at the destination reaches about -110 Celsius, which freezes the Dal Lake.

"Massive Water Wonder" new review

  • 6.50/7
  • Posted 4 days ago
The 50 km diameter lake is by no means a mere water body but a spectacular one at that. Picturesque, beautifully endowed by nature, this lake is the lifeline of Kashmir. So much so that our driver and guide told us that during the floods, it was the Dal Lake that saved many parts of the City of Srinagar when the ill fated floods of 2014 occurred.

In the early morning the lake is quite a contrast to the otherwise busy, noisy environment it sees due to tourists, hawkers, etc.

It is a must visit if you are going to Srinagar. The place is kids friendly too. And the best part is the view. There is boating facility and there is floating market of accessories and shawls. You can carry some snacks to eat. There is no street food available.

"Do shikara ride before sunset" new review

  • 5.00/7
  • Posted 2 weeks ago
Visit Dal lake once with family. Do shikara ride b4 sunset 1-2 Hrs. Avoid photography as they waste most of the time. 4-5 points they will cover up including floating vegetables, garden, Market etc. Stay in Houseboat away from roads as near by roads too much crowded on the Bouleward road.

"Beautiful in the evening or early morning" new review

  • 6.00/7

It was a lovely experience if you just don't regard the sellers trying to sell their goods on the Shikara which can get little irritating. I will suggest Nigeen lake side of the Dal lake for a calm and relaxing shikara ride.

"Breath taking view" new review

  • 6.00/7

Srinagar is synonymous with Boulevard and the Dal Lake. It is quite a stretch. On the outskirts at spaces you have the various gardens.

While you may be tempted to take a Shikara ride in the day time. My advice will be during sunset. 2 reasons, one that the scenic beauty during sunset is far better. Second, you will not be bothered by persistent hawkers who can make a killing selling you something that you don't require. Also be wary that each of these Shikara chaps have a deal with some or the other vendor in the floating market. So, if you wish to buy stuff then encourage the chap else simply enjoy the ride. Moreover, there is no fixed rate of Shikara. You may get fleeced one day and go reasonably cheap the other. The funny thing is that they expect a 'tip or bakshish' after that too. This seems to be the culture of Kashmir.

Restaurants in the place are an apology. The most annoying bit is the persistence of the autowalas in hounding you to take you to the bazaar (again they have their cuts waiting).

Besides the sunset ride, did not find anything else that appealed to my culinary taste buds.

A must visit if you are in Srinagar and dont forget the shikara ride. There is thriving floating market on this river. A relaxing shikara ride is the best part about this lake.
