Dal Lake remains crowded throughout the year and is popularly known for its houseboats and Shikaras. This lake covers an area of about 26 sq. km. and has a long shore line of approximately 15.5 km. It is divided intro four different sections that are connected through four causeways and can be reached easily from the city of Srinagar. It is an ideal site in the region for enjoying swimming, kayaking, houseboats, canoeing, angling, Shikara riding and water surfing.

This place is regarded as the summer capital of the state of Jammu and Kashmir and is the second largest lake in the state. It is popularly called as 'Srinagar's Jewel' or 'Jewel in the crown of Kashmir'. This place is also ideal for fishing along with water plant harvesting. During the winter season, the temperature at the destination reaches about -110 Celsius, which freezes the Dal Lake.

The lake is vast and the surroundings are mind-blowing. You can see the snow clad mountains and enjoy the refreshing beauty. The lake is very clean and the shikara ride is worth the penny you spend.

Boat ride is very exhilarating. Shikaras are quite enterprising but beware of the sellers of souvenirs during the boat ride, if you are not alert you may be taken for a ride.

"Good shopping in shikara itself" new review

  • 3.50/7
  • Posted 1 month ago
Dal lake was nice, we didn't have enough time to spend so we hired a shikara for just an hour, we were told total journey is about 4 hrs. All shopping facilities are there in the lake only, must do Shikara ride, go to Char Chinar inside and see all the houseboats and gardens etc.

"Mesmerizing feel in the shikara"

  • 6.00/7
  • Posted 1 month ago
Dal lake is the eternal symbol of the valley. Just sit beside it and you will be mesmerized. Boating in the morning or evening to have an amazing experience. Afternoon can be really hot in June, so rest in the afternoon! Do not miss the Shikara rides, because they introduce you to a very unique ambience as well as culture. You can rest lazily in a shikara , close your eyes, listen to the soothing sound of water.
