Home to a multitude of temples, Mathura was once a Buddhist centre, the ruins of which are now on display at the Archaeological Museum.

Kurukshetraa popular getaway from Delhi, is a region close to Delhi and is the famous war land described in the Mahabharata. According to legend, this is the place where Lord Brahma created the world, and the city is to this day is perennially filled with pilgrims and tourists alike to wash away their sins in the Ganges and to attain ‘moksha’.

The Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, which is currently known as Keoladeo National Park or Keoladeo Ghana National Park, is found around 197 kms from Delhi and is worth visiting with friends and family. It is home to some of the rarest species of birds and is one of the popular destinations for wildlife photography and bird watching. Many ornithologists visit this World Heritage Site to study the wide variety of avifauna found within the National Park.

Neemrana is another favourite outing and holidaying destination for history buffs and wildlife enthusiasts. It is a historical town found in the Alwar district of Rajasthan and is situated around 122 kms from the capital city, Delhi. Close to the city is another fort in Kesroli which is one of the oldest heritage sights of the nation where travellers can see houses of Buddhist Vihara at Virat Nagar, where the Pandavas are rumoured to have stayed during their exile in the Mahabharata.

Formerly on the list of the seven wonders of the world, Taj Mahal, built by Shah Jahan to house the tomb of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, is found in Agra, 209 kms away from Delhi and is one of famous getaways near Delhi. Famous for its minarets, the complex is set around a 980sq.ft garden which was once filled with beautiful plants and trees. Agra is found on a large bend of the Yamuna River and the fort and the Taj Mahal overlook the river from opposing banks. 

The oldest national park in India, Jim Corbett National Park too is a viable option for short weekend excursions near Delhi. It is located in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand. The most famous aspect of this park is the jeep safari which is conducted in the early morning hours, and can result in sightings of deer, elephants and even a tiger if you’re lucky!

Nainital is a Himalayan resort town known as the Lake District of India. Characterized by breath-taking view points from its surrounding hills, the city offers its visitors boat rides, treks, horse riding and a variety of other activities. The cool weather of Nainital helps you escape the scorching summers of Delhi. Shopping is a crowd favourite in Nainital, with most hotels crowded around the Mall Road. 

Haridwar is the city where the famous Kumbh Mela is held once every 12 years. Other weekend getaways around Delhi

Amritsar is a city of history and tragedy. Auli, found 500 kms as one of the most beautiful places to visit from Delhi, is where one can enjoy the longest cable car ride in India and the Asian continent. The area is also known for lush oak forests and snow-capped mountains.

Dharamshala, nestled in the Western Himalayas, is a city of religious importance to Buddhists and a home of his Holiness, the Dalai Lama. It is one of the most visited hills stations in India during vacations due to its beauty and significance and a popular choice for weekend trips from Delhi. Mcleodganj in Dharamshala has mesmerising landscapes and is a popular destination for trekkers. The best time to visit Dharamshala is from March to June and August to December.
