About Dhavaleshwar Temple

Dhavaleshwar is a tiny island located on the Mahandi River and is only 4 km from city of Cuttack. The island got its name from Dhavaleshwar or Shiva temple located here. The sculptures of the temple date back to the period of 10th century, although the temple is a new structure.

The place is widely visited by devotees, particularly during the time of the Dhavaleshwar Mela, Shivarathri and Bada Osha during the month of November. This island is also an ideal place for picnics. The government of Orissa is intitiating to develop the place as a tourist spot by introducing boating and jet skiing facilities. Around 15 km from this island is the on-sea beach of Gopalpur, which used to serve as an important shipping port for the British.
