Dhirdham Temple in Darjeeling is a well known tourist destination. A Hindu temple, Dhirdham Temple was constructed in 1939 by Rai Saheb Purna Bahadur Pradhan.
The temple is said to be designed by an architect named Beg Raj Shakya and is believed to be inspired from the Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu, Nepal. The architecture of both the temples has resemblances to each other. The design and architecture of this Hindu temple resembles Tibetan and Buddhist architectural styles. The facade of the temple is in pagoda style.
There is a statue of Lord Shiva at the entrance of the Dhirdham Temple. The statue depicts the ‘Pancha Bakram Tri Netram’ concept. It represents the five different expressions of Lord Shiva in five situations and the third eye. Lord Shiva is regularly worshiped in Dhirdham Temple and there are ‘aratis’ at 8 am and 6 pm everyday.
The location of the Dhirdham Temple also contributes to its popularity. The temple is located close to the Darjeeling railway station and lies to the south of the Darjeeling city centre.
