Imphal food, sight-seeing and shopping options
When one mentions Imphal w3hat comes to mind is the largest fresh water lake on North East, Loktak lake. It is approx. 50 km from the main city. Near Loktak, is Moirang, a place so small yet occupies such an important place in Indian freedom movement. It is the place where where Netaji’s Azad Hind Fauz hoisted the flag of the Indian National Army on April 14,1944. In the city , a visit to Govindajee temple is a must. Try to go early morning. The morning arati is a sight to behold. Kangla was the centre of Manipur’s power during the reign of earlier rulers. The remains of the old Govindajee Temple inside the Kangla and other relics inside and outside the moat still depicts the story of the rich art and culture of Manipur. To be really honest, Kangla fort which I had kept till the end as it was nearer to the hotel, it was a bit disappointing. After having heard so much about the Fort, when we finally went inside we found that it was just another stroll ground! We expected to find some remains of the old palace inside, we walked and walked but found nothing much except for the remains of the Old Govindajee Temple. May be we took the wrong direction! Khwairamband Bazar / Ima Market : It is a site to see for sure. A market bustling with more than 1,000 “ Ima” or mothers who run the stalls . It has 2 parts on the either sides of the road. On one side ,fishes, vegetables, groceries etc are sold and on the other side, Manipuri handlooms and handicrafts etc. can be bought. One suggestion, please avoid the Ima market if it is raining!
