Nubra Valley Sightseeing - Diskit Village

The popular tourist destination of Diskit Village is located slightly off the little hamlet of Khalsar in the Nubra Valley. Dotted with apricot plantations, Diskit is one of the larger villages of the region, and is home to the 350 year-old Diskit Gompa ? the oldest and the largest monastery in the Nubra Valley.

For tourists who would like to spend a few relaxing days here, Diskit has a number of decent budget hotels and guesthouses. For a real flavor of the region, stay with one of the several families who rent out rooms to tourists. These are by far the best places to stay and the food is guaranteed to bowl you over. The inveterate shopper might find the odd store here and there.

The road from Diskit to the quaint little Hunder Village, winds through a golden stretch of sand dunes. As you drive down this stretch, keep your eyes peeled for the double-humped Bactrian camels! They are hugely popular with visitors to the Valley.

You could visit the Hunder Gompa, which has a statue of the Buddha as well as some old frescos. The monastery offers you a breathtaking view of the setting sun.

While touring Ladakh, you would be well advised to carry your supplies wherever you go since facilities offered are negligible. You can pack up your food hamper and picnic among the scenic spots that dot the glorious landscape.
