Quick getaway from the city to a beautiful town in the Western Ghats. Its an awesome place, with few houses spread across a huge area. Among them is Doddamanne, the legendary house where the Malgudi Days was shot. The house, family, culture, humanity, food, and accommodation are top class. They take extreme care of the guests and the food cooked by Kasturi Akka is basic local food yet very delicious.
Everything was excellent in the hotel. The food was good in the hotel. The activities were not available in the hotel. I would not suggest anything to this hotel. I had visited this hotel with my family for personal trip.
The hotel was located nearby the bus stand. The appearance of the hotel building was old. The staff’s service was good. Wi-Fi service was not available at the hotel. The attached toilet was not available in the room. Only common bathroom was available in the hotel. The hotel had provided food in the hotel. The food quality was nice. The activity was not available at the hotel. The hotel was not value for money. I had visited this hotel with my family for relaxation trip. I had booked this room by on the spot.
A neatly maintained house with extremely friendly people. Kasturakka who maintains the place serves you home made kashaya as soon as you enter the place and from there you will fell like you have entered a different, simple and pleasing land. Simple yet beautiful and clean rooms. Food being the main attraction of the place one could easily say that this is the best stay in Agumbe and indeed a must visit place.
All this started with Mayuri (our so called "Manager") and I talking about taking a break from all the monotonicity. Agumbe was on my list since a long long time as some of my friends from NCBS had been there on research trips and the feedback was amazing. All this was accompanied by joining of Rakesh(the "sensible" guy) in our group. The first word he uttered hearing our location was "leeches". All this was followed by him narrating A to Z of Leeches which was the stepping stone in paranoia of Mayuri Madam. Regarding the stay, Doddamane was chosen by one of the new members to the group (Anagh) who made us even more enthused about the place with all the historical background (Malgudi Days shooting and stuff). Apart from a few hiccups, Murti Bhaiya (our evergreen driver) dropped us to the place by 7 in the morning. And I gotta tell u this. The Hospitality was amazing. The moment we entered the place, we could sense the aroma of malta(a local drink made from 29 herbs) which was to be served to us post our breakfast(which again not to mention was amazing). All this was followed by a "getting to the places to visit" round where Sravan(our only kannada speaking buddy) got the overview of the places around. After that we went for Barkana Falls and and Jogigundi falls for next two days. We played Mafia at night which didnt last long as we were too high and tired to continue. So Overall the trip was worth it. Beware of leeches!!!
It's a very old house, 125 years old. Built in a typical malnad style. Easy to find as well, as Agumbe is a small village and Doddamane is pretty much famous. People in the home are very friendly and the food variety include the malnad style which was very tasty. There is no fixed charges for the food and stay. It's up to the visitor. Suggestion : Holiday IQ - please recognise and encourage such places as many places as possible.
You are on your way from Agumbe to Udupi and on the Agumbe main road you see this big old house which is famously called as 'Doddamane'. You stop! You stop.. You go near the door and you knock on it. Someone from inside shouts. Come inside! So you hesitantly walk inside this place which by the way is 175-200 years old.. You look around and you can see an amazing house.. You enter the kitchen, you hear a old lady in her 70's saying "bani" (come in) and you enter and your greeted by a very warm and comfortable smile. She asks you to go freshen up and come. After that you'll experience something which will remain with you for a long long time. Kasturi akka has been doing this kinda service since 40yrs and her motto is to make sure no one says Agumbe doesn't have a good place to stay. Let me talk about the ambience of the place. This is a very old house which is maintained nicely. It gives you an chance to live like how people in the villages do. It has a sense of calm. It makes you feel at peace with yourself. Now the service. What can I say about it. Kasturi akka treats you like her own child and gives you everything that is necessary to have an awesome experience. Her smile will make all your worries go away and will make you feel comfortable. She makes you so comfortable and you create such a bond with her that you'll feel a lump in your throat when your leaving this place. The whole family will help you have an awesome experience. There mantra is 'Atithi Devo Bhava' and they live by it.. Now the food. If you want to enjoy the best south Indian food then this is place to be. They service you so many varieties of dishes on a banana leaf. They take the effort to make sure no one goes feeling half empty. Akka will even make you some food if you ask her to go on treks. She'll advise you on the places to see. Now the rate! They won't demand anything. You can give how much ever you want and they'll take it. My suggestion is. Every person who is living in the metro city go to this place and just realise you don't need money to be happy and how peaceful life can be. A must visit place. Thanks Akka for the best time of my life :) Will come back soon!!
The hotel was very finely located near the city and I did not face any difficulty in reaching the place. I was there for a college trip. The staff at the hotel were very friendly and obedient. The hotel appearance was good. The rooms were spacious, clean and well maintained with all the amenities at a perfect condition. There was no view from the room. There was no delay during check-in and check-out and the money spent on the hotel was affordable.
This is not a luxury hotel or resort. It felt so like home with an excellent hospitality. It is a perfect family destination and you will be provided typical vegetarian food. Tariff is very reasonable. It's better to book your accommodation in advance, as it remains jam packed in the seasons.
Overall, my experience was very good in this hotel. I went there with my family in the month of May. It was a relaxation trip. Rooms were neat, clean, and spacious. TV, AC, hot water, etc. everything was perfect. Services were excellent and on time. Food was available and it was delicious. Both veg and non-veg dishes were served in this hotel. Online booking can be done also. I faced no problem during check-in and check-out timing. Booking service was charming. It was a fantastic place as tourism.

Dodda Manne literally means a Big House- it is a ancestral home of a joint family headed by Kasturi Akka a wonderful woman .This is not a lodge or homestay which is organized to woo people but a good hearted person's venture to give travelers shelter and to provide food .There is no fixed rates they take only what is given at the end of your stay . It is a wonderful experience driving through lovely forest areas and get a good place to halt -i.e at this warm home and be pampered by them. The rooms given to you would depend on availability as there are dormitory type and smaller rooms all over the old house - but expect no privacy .
I had been to agumbe thinking there was only 1 hotel and i searched holiday iq and found another staying place called doddamane.it was worth going there just to stay we had no plans of going to agumbe as we thought that there is no place to stay but after going to doddamane i had a feeling that i went to my grandma place as i received the same treatment there. food was excellent, no words to say about the hospitality. very cool place to visit and would recommend to go here for staying. I would go to agumbe next time just to stay there as it gives a wonderful experience, loved the stay there.
Good Experience, Homely Feel, True Authentic South Indian Food Servied at fixed timing.
If you have posh rooms, marble/ title flooring, beautiful drapes, attached bathrooms in mind for your holiday stay, this is not the place. On the contrary, you want a home away from home, want to show your children how people live in the villages and how they actually take care of guests, then this is the place. Might not be comfortable for people who are born and bought up with all facilities in the city. The only problem we had was it was not attached bath room and I had a 3.5yr kid and carrying her for her night trip to the bathroom was difficult.
Doddamane is Agumbe is got a immense difference from other resorts or any five star hotels. Location is also good. Hospitality is an excellence in this place. The lady in-charge is the soul of this place. Wonderful home made food is cooked here. Overall a place must to visit.
Agumbe is known for its tropical climate and cobras. Shouldn't be a suprise if it's the preferred home of a number of Ekans. Read More
