Eagles Crag

A short walk up the hill from the Kurseong railway station gets you to the popular tourist spot of Eagle's Crag viewpoint. The panorama that unfolds beneath and around you is, in a word, breathtaking.

To the north are the snowcapped peaks of Kanchendzonga, Jannu and Kabru. You can trace the Teesta River and see the dense evergreen forests of the Darjeeling valley below. Trekkers will love the trekking trails that lead away from here into the surrounding mountains and forests.

The tourist complex at the summit offers a few attractions to visitors in the form of a cafeteria and a watchtower. Explore the adjacent Park that has a beautiful flower garden. Set amidst the garden is the Shahid Smarak, a concrete altar with a khukri on top. This is a memorial to the brave who sacrificed their lives during the 1988 agitation.  The water reservoir here feeds the entire town of Kurseong.

The Netaji Kothi is an Observatory that was once the summer home of the late Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose but is now an almost ruined building. Perched atop the summit, the viewpoint has a sweeping view of the surrounding hill ranges and the little hamlets that dot the slopes. On a summer night, it is lovely to sit here in the cool breeze and watch the twinkling lights of Siliguri town.

Once you have trudged up the hill to the viewpoint, take a breather and relax at the cafeteria or the flower garden. Pick out a quiet spot and enjoy the verdant beauty around you.
