| Eturnagaram Sanctuary |
|
|
|
The Eturnagaram Sanctuary is situated in the district of Warangal
and is a 250 km drive from Hyderabad.
Spread across an area of 806 square km, the sanctuary is considered to be one
of the oldest sanctuaries of the country.
The region of the Eturnagaram Sanctuary is characterized by a
verdant and undulating land surface. A part of the region is covered with
hills. The sanctuary has a thick cover of tropical, dry and deciduous type of
vegetation. You will find that the sanctuary abounds with teak, bamboo and
other trees like madhuca and terminalia. The perennial river Dayyam Vagu waters
the sanctuary. The river separates the sanctuary into two parts and you will
find interesting reptiles here like the Mugger crocodile and snakes like the
Python, Cobra and Krait.
A part of the sanctuary is home to the carnivorous animals. Keep a
look out for tigers, panthers, leopards, wolves, jackals and sloth bears. Try
to time your visit to the park between October and January, as this is the best
time to get maximum sightings. The climate is also quite pleasant and you will
see Nature in all her green glory after the monsoons. You will find some
endangered species here like the black buck, chousingha or the four horned
antelope, nilgai, sambar, wild dogs, spotted deer, chinkara and giant
squirrels.
If you are a nature lover or have an adventurous streak, you will
enjoy your visit here. Be sure to bring your camera along in case you get lucky
and spot a spotted Deer! The sanctuary has good connectivity from Warangal and Hyderabad. |
