The
Galibore Fishing and Nature Camp, 95 Km away from Bangalore and 16 Km away from Bheemeshwari,
is tucked away from the maddening crowd, deep in the deciduous forests, on the
banks of the River Kaveri. The place gets its name from a windy hillock called
Galibore, situated just behind the camp. It is set amidst a wilderness of
gigantic Terminalia Arjuna trees, with the river flowing in front, and the
hills on either side of the river. Wild elephants often come to the banks of
the river to drink. At the camp, there is a great barbecue corner around which
you can enjoy a drink while the meat gets cooked.
Go
for long or short walks while there, go fishing or if you prefer some bird
watching, observe 95 species of birds, including rare ones like the grey headed
fishing eagle, spotbilled duck, small pied kingfisher and the black-bellied
river tern. You can also spot crocodiles, turtles and otters in the water and
elephants, deer, wild boars and grizzly giant squirrels wandering past on land.
For the adventurous souls, who are looking for something more active, there is
mountain biking, kayaking and rafting on the river Kaveri. If lazing around is
your idea of a holiday, then you could stay put at the Camp site and relax in a
hammock.
The best time to visit is just after the monsoon,
between August and February, when the river is swollen and the forest and its
surroundings are rich with lush vegetation. This time is ideal for bird
watchers too, as river terns, fishing eagles, wood peckers, king fishers, and
plenty of other species flock here in large numbers. However, at other times the
water recedes to reveal wide sand banks where you could laze in the evenings or
wade in the many lagoons created by the ebbing water. Summers (March , June)
can be very warm, especially in the afternoons. |
