The temple of Gangotri is located at a height of 3200 m above sea level. It is 100 km from Uttarkashi and was established in the 18th century by General Amar Singh Thapa, on the banks of the Bhagirathi. It is very popular among pilgrims. Quite a number of ashrams have come up on various sites which offer decent accommodation. Some of the nearby places that can be visited are Kedarkund, Gaurikund and Patangna.
