About Ghanteswari Temple

The Ghanteswari Temple, also referred to as Maa Ghanteswari Temple, is situated 33 km south-west of Sambalpur, on the banks of River Mahanadi. This temple is famous for its wish fulfilling bells that are offered by the devotees, to the goddess of this temple. These bells are seen all around this temple and were also used to warn and guide early sailors.

The area around this temple is a conglomeration of three streams. The Mahanadi river used to have many whirlpools in earlier times and many boats used to drown in it. So, to warn any sailor nearing this spot, the bells of this temple were shaken fiercely to produce loud sounds. Due to this, this temple is also called the ‘lighthouse without light’. The place became safer after the construction of the Hirakud Dam, nearby. The Chiplima Hydro Power plant is also situated near this temple.

Searching for a place to hangout with friends ends unanimously to Ghanteswari. We all set out in our bikes and the road connectivity is very good we enjoyed the bike ride and after reaching there we found it very exciting. The echo of bells and sound made by flowing river made it awesome. Good road side dhabas served yummy food and after offering prayer to lord Shiva we sat beside the bank of river and talked endlessly. Overall a trip to be remembered for lifetime.

The place fulfills the requirement of god loving people as well as nature loving people. The god is very powerful here as told by local people. Marriage of one of my office friendís daughter was fixed at outside India after praying in this temple. The surrounding beauty of nature, river & man made water hydraulic project channel made the place a dream place to visit for short while. Ideal time for visit is between Sept to February
