I have been in Mysore Ginger Hotel repeatedly and was always more than content. The room is Nice, it has a beautiful view on an old haveli-like building, many trees and Chamundi Hill in the background. For me as a writer, the desk and really good office chair in front of it are especially Nice and prevent my back from aching after a long writing session. The staff are helpful and always very friendly. A taxi company is in the same house organizing good AC cars with knowledgeable drivers for trips in Mysore and surrounding. The room has a small fridge that is working even if you are not there. I did not try meals in the hotel so that I cannot write anything on that, but the breakfast was Nice, perhaps except the toast that was baked with sugar, for me as a westerner a horror !! So I had lovely Idlis instead. The only real disadvantage in this hotel was the extremely noisy Indian family next to my roon, I guess I will never understand why in Indian hotels so many people use to shout in the corridors and never close their room doors when they are inside. But this is not part of the hotel's responsibility, - or yes, they might have put signs asking people to keep silence in the corricors, especially in nights and early mornings. In all, a wonderful experience, I will come again and stay in Ginger Hotel soon!
1. Near the zoo (our purpose was mainly zoo). 2. Other restaurant located closer to hotel. 3. Neat rooms with proper amenities (hot water, clean beds, clean toilets). 4. No buffet for lunch (a la-carte only). 5. Sufficient parking. 6. Value for money. 7. Have a water dispenser and you need not buy bottled water (if not too particular about drinking only bottled water). 8. There is no space outside (other than parking), if you want to take a walk after dinner. 9. Usually full on weekends.
Ginger Hotel was a different experience altogether right from its concept of utilitarian existence to its professionalism when it comes to service by staff. I liked the concept of conservation whether it is the soap, shampoo or water. Staff were seemingly ingrained in courteousness and ready to help even when I landed unannounced in the middle of the night. They gave me an estimate of 20 mins while they checked about my settling in and with minimum fuss arranged a room with customised service within a budget as per my needs. Breakfast Buffet was modest but Lunch and Dinner was a ravishing experience with Butter Rice, Peas Pulao and Paneer Tikka grilled to perfection. Almost makes me want to visit again for the mouth watering delicacies they served me each on the 3 days I was boarding with them. The receptionist though not having any proper concierge, was able to summon up a rickshaw ride at 5 mins notice on multiple occasions when I had to visit the main city. Staff were also informative and regaled me with short tales of local legend and provided a usefully accurate itinerary of places to visit around town.
I booked online for my stay at Hotel Ginger, Mysore. Their online reservation system is neat. I had to carry the printout of online voucher to be presented at front desk at the time of check in. Room number will be allocated upon check-in. The front desk asked for my ID card, full address of the place I came from, my email id and phone number. I booked a Double room for 2 nights and 3 days with complementary breakfast included in the cost of the package. Check in/Checkout is 12 noon. I reached Ginger at around 1:30 PM on 2nd April 2011 and checked out at 12 Noon on 4th April 2011. I got complimentary breakfast on 3rd April 2011 and 4th April 2011 at the hotel restaurant called \'The Square Meal\'. Complimentary breakfast is not served in the room. One can have it in the dining area only. The total package cost me INR 3,999/- inclusive of taxes. I did not have to pay a penny more than this amount. Since it’s a budget hotel with emphasis on self-service, Ginger does not charge “Service Charge”.
Those looking for a hotel in a good location in Mysore and on a budget should consider Ginger. The hotel is clean, staff are courteous and the travel desk is friendly and helpful. Negatives: Food options for lunch and other meals are not so great. Rooms a bit small and have poorly placed switch boards. Travel desk drivers are not helpful because they don't double up as guides. Most of them don't know much about the places around Mysore that we visited. Despite this, the travel arrangements were not expensive, were hassle free and drivers had clean cars and behaved very well. Overall, a good experience staying at Ginger. But for those willing to spend a few hundred rupees extra, you can get better experiences elsewhere too!
