Goa State Museum, constructed in 1977, is located at a distance of around 13.6 km from the Mapusa town. It has a collection of articles categorised into sections like religion, art and history. The museum is divided into 12 galleries that showcase collection of more than eight thousand articles.
Some of the items that can be found in the galleries are coins, bronze objects, handicrafts, paintings, anthropological items as well as Hindu and Jain sculptures. The galleries also include diverse forms of artefacts, pebble sculptures and copper inscriptions.
Paintings of popular Indian artists are showcased in the Contemporary Art Gallery. The Freedom Struggle Gallery houses portraits representing the freedom struggle of Goa.
