Golconda Fort, a chief attraction of Hyderabad city, is situated towards the western outskirts of Hyderabad at a distance of about 11 km from the city centre.

The word ‘Golconda’ originated from ‘Golla Konda’ which stands for ‘Shepherd’s Hill’ in Telugu. Golconda Fort came under the control of many dynasties like Yadava Dynasty, Kakatiya Dynasty, Bahmani Dynasty, Qutb Shahis and Mughal Dynasty.

Golconda Fort was first constructed of mud by the rulers of Kakatiya Dynasty in the 13th century. It was later re-built in granite by the first three Qutb Shahis, which took about 62 years to complete. Golconda Fort was under the control of Qutb Shahis from 1518 AD to 1687 AD. Later, the Mughals invaded Golconda Fort and the fort was brought to ruins.

The boundary wall of Golconda Fort that towers to a height of about 120 meters covers about 10 km. There are four small forts inside Golconda Fort which comprise of armoury, temples, mosques, stables, etc.

The fort has 8 gates (Darwazas) of which the most important is 'Fateh Darwaza’. Fateh Darwaza or the Victory Gate is also the entry point to the fort. It is famous for its acoustic effects, which was an effective security measure in those days.  It is said that the sound of clapping of hands at Fateh Darwaza can be heard clearly at ‘Bala Hissar’, the highest point situated about 1 km away in Golconda Fort.

The main features of Golconda Fort are its royal palaces, efficient water supply system, and whispering walls. Fateh Rahben gun, a cannon used by Aurangzeb to demolish the blockades of Golconda Fort, is an important exhibit of this fort.

There is an old tree in Golconda Fort which is about 800 years old. This tree is about 80 feet in circumference and can accommodate up to 12 people in the hollow in the middle. The Fort holds a Light and Sound Show in which the story of Golconda Fort is narrated.

It was a pleasant experience. I loved the sight structurally and historically. It was an fort which build by nizam's of Hyderabad during their rule. These is an attraction in Golconda I. E ., if we clap by standing under thomb it can be heard on top of the fort. The great disciple baktha ramadasu who build the temple for lord rama in bhadrachalam was kept in jail in Golconda fort. Like this there are many historical thongs which I liked about Golconda fort.

I had travelled to Hyderabad City and It was very excitement for me. There was a lot of places in Hyderabad. I have seen CHAAR MINAR, GOLKUNDA FORT, RAMOJI FILM CITY, BIRLA MANDIR, SALORJUNG MUSUEM. I enjoyed in this city this city have a lot tour travells available and hotel also. We can stay in these type of hotel. I stayed in BALAJI HOTEL which was the near of SECUDERABAD. I also like Biryani that is available in Hyderabad City. This delicious food is very famous in Hyderabad. I am vegeterian So I preferred to eat VEG-BIRYANI. I think that NON-VEG BIRYANI was also good smelling of it's spice but I didn't test it. I have enjoyed on all places. For wandering in Hyderabad a lot of travel facility available there from Secunderabad and Hyderabad.

"A beautiful heritage, but not maintained as it should have been."

  • 7.0/7
  • Posted Nov 25, 2017
Any on sunny day is a good time to visit. I went there on a winter afternoon, which made it a very good trip. This place has a entrance fees of Rs. 15/-. Mobile phones are allowed free, but there is a charge of Rs. 25/- for Still Cameras. Guides are available on cost who can tell you all about the fort. It is advisable to take a guide from the Tourism Dept. The Fort will take more than 4-5 hours to see it completely.
It is advised to carry a pack of water/ energy drink, at it is a long walk on stone steps.
On reaching the top there is a shop which sells snacks, water and cool drinks.
The path to the top of the fort is not smooth, wearing shoes will be most comfortable.
The Fort has many beautiful locations which are worth seeing. But many parts of the fort is neglected. If these parts of the fort can be taken care of, the whole Fort will be a treat to the eyes.

Good to visit in morning hours when gates opens at 10 am.
The marvellous architecture of the fort makes some interesting point in this. If this first time, without guide you would not able to get some important architectural structures the fort is having.

"Amazing Fort !!"

  • 7.0/7
  • Posted Nov 8, 2017
If you are visiting Hyderabad please do check this amazing place from where you can see entire Hyderabad city. You need to climb approx 360 steps to reach the fort. This place is massive so take out proper time to visit this place. The best thing was the sound & light show which is every day around 6:30 pm, it's a 1 hour show where ticket cost is 140 rs only. So if you are interested to see the show then visit this place in afternoon around 3 to cover fort and to see the show.

"The Garden of Stone."

Amidst the crowdy and dusty city of Hyderabad the bygone era of opulence has carved a rock-upon-rock magnificent structure that would communicate with you of its majestic past and mystetious life if you lend your ears in awe. Such a solace in the concrete jungle is Golconda.
