Gondola Lift is considered as one of the major attractions of Gulmarg. Designed in technical collaboration with a French Company PUMA, and managed by the Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation, it is the only cable car system in Asia that travels up an elevation of 13,500 ft above sea level.
It is located on the backdrop of the beautiful Himalayan Peaks in the Gondola Village of Gulmarg. The Gondola covers the distance from Gulmarg to Kongdoor and from Kongdoor to Apharwat.
This cable lift service comprises 2 stretches that travel a total distance of 5 km. Completed in May 2005, the second stage of the Gulmarg-Apharwat cable car project links Kongdoor station at 3,099 m with Apharwat at 3,979 m. Between Kongdoor and Apharwat, the vertical rise is 880 m.
It uses 19 towers to operate the Gulmarg-Kongdoor stretch and can handle 1,500 people at maximum per hour. The other stretch is Kongdoor to Apharwat, which uses 18 towers and can handle 600 people per hour. In 2005, a consortium of Indian and French companies completed this project.
What holidayIQ travellers feel about the cleanliness of this attraction.
The cable ride is truly wonderful. Six individuals are allowed per car. It's divided into two phases. Phase 1 is the first level while Phase 2 is the second level I. E. 14000 ft . We got snow at Phase 2 and it was really enjoyable to play in snow on a sunny day. We didn't even require our sweaters or overcoats, such was the weather. Our feet got inside now up to knee length, which was a surprise. Enjoyed every part of it.
Firstly as soon as I reached this place we were rounded by many tour guides who said that the queue for getting the tickets for Gondola was very long and it would take at least 2 hrs to get tickets and then we were approached by Horse riders who said that the Gondola was more than 4km from the parking area. Thanks to our driver who had alerted on these frauds much before hand, the walk from the parking to Gondola is not more than 15 min on a pucca road and we could get our tickets within 10 min. I was able to avoid wasting money on the guide. However, after buying our tickets we had to wait for 2hrs for our turn in to the ropeway car. I suggest do not take any guide. The rope way ride is in three phases, first phase are easily available, but the second phase must be booked well in advance. (There is online booking available for both phases). We got tickets only for the first phase as we were not aware about the online booking facility.
I visited Gulmarg with my family and took the gondola ride to see the beautiful snow covered mountains. The views are breathtaking. The ride in each way to the first level is for 5 minutes. There is no need to take guide to see the mountains. We had no problems when we took the ride to see the Himalayas but while coming back we had to face huge crowd as everybody rushed to take the ride back and there was no queue at all and there were no member from the Gondola to take care of anything. I strongly would like to say that it could have been better managed as they charge huge fee to see the attraction.
Gondola will take you to heaven, Gulmarg, it's the most beautiful place in entire kashmir. You need buy tickets for Gondola either you can book online if you're visiting in peak season or you can buy from counter. You need to take a special cab for Gulmarg also know as Chain wali gadi to cover a route of around 8 km till Gondola lift. This ride will cost you Rs 700 per person.
The best place is Gondola. There will be lot of guides who will be after you. But there is no need of one.
You can walk to the Gondola cable booking office easily in 10 min.
Try to buy tickets yourself in Queue and don't rely on agents. Not required as time taken is same.
At the top skiing prices are only max of 500-600 with instructor. They will start with 2000 so don't get fooled. Also sledging prices are just 100-200 and not 500 which is generally quoted. If you go with guide you will be forced to shell out more and no choice. All prices are in general more than twice. So bargain.
Try to take black boots and good coats which is Rs 100-200 per person.
Place wise excellent for snow activities. Phase 1 is sufficient. Bakshi restaurant is very good.
First time I saw snow this much in quantity and just went crazy :p. Throw snowballs at each other until you get tired and drenched in your sweat :)
Make sure to build a SNOWMAN, yes I built one and it was an amazing feeling. Chose the perfect time to visit here so that everything is covered in snow but not too much of snow else Level 2 might be closed.
Gondola Ride was indeed a new experience. Watch out for the soft snow, the part on which people walk becomes hard but if you wander off a bit further outside the railings you might find yourself in such a snow that half your leg will go inside :p
Be sure to lend the correct sized boots and jackets from the shopkeepers and finally ENJOY LIKE THERE'S NO TOMORROW, just go CRAZY in the snow.
This was my first view of snow and I was super thrilled. Worth every penny we spent on the tickets upto level 2. We visited in May so at level 1 there wasn't much. Skiing as they call it isn't worth so beware. Cameras have to be taken care of in the snow. Cable car ride was also thrilling. Overall wonderful.
It was actually amazing, phase 17000ft and phase 214000 ft, it actually gives you awesome feeling of watching the snow. This ride gives you the feeling of floating in clouds and it takes you to 14000 ft and gives you feeling that you are standing above clouds.
It was an awesome experience to visit Gulmarg in Winter. In the last week of Dec, the temperature was around 2 degrees in the afternoon. Since it was Winter, Gondola ride was restricted to stage 1 only. Please wear heavy Winter clothes and high boots (both available for rent) to overcome the cold conditions.
The view of snow-clad mountains, barren trees (no leaves because of winter), houses, etc. Are most unforgettable.
