We were looking at a short break from the city and found one, on the various websites Gorukana has been mentioned. Gorukana is a place run and managed by Soliga Tribes and its heartening to see how a certain vision by one Dr Sudarshan, has made this place a paradise of nature About the amenities, there is almost everything here, the cottages, are clean and have all facilities. Though the bed sheet had faint stains of blood in our room, I still would go with it, for the whole experience of the forest. The staff is very courteous, they are all children of the tribals who now are educated in good schools so its very satisfying to see them lead a honorable life and in the bonfire time, you get to see their children who are so talented perform with all their heart for us guests. It's indeed going to be one of the most heartening time of your stay. - The bonfire With folklore and traditions explained by a very friendly person they entertain you thoroughly and enrich you with stories As far as advice, do not expect the world, its a forest actually, its not a boutique resort with manicured pool and lawn. It is raw and close to nature, the scenery will take your breath away. The food is very home like and made extremely hygienically, and tastes really good. Unlike many resorts here, the food is so satisfying that you will not overeat or feel the fullness, its extremely home like However there is something I would like to tell people who are scared of lizards. I know many are. Be prepared, there are many, a little too many for comfort in the room and bathrooms. I was happy I didn't opt for the tree house, as that would have been filled, given that there were so many in the cottages itself. Anywhere you see, on the roof, there are quite many, also in the bathrooms. But it is part of forest life, so get over it, as soon as you can The best part is still there- the star light, night sky. It's a wonder, to watch the tall trees with stars shining at night, I can never forget that scene, when I accidentally got up at night and kept staring at the sky, lit with stars. It is really a beautiful place to be, do visit (This is for the management of the place- the nature walk that is mentioned and included in our stay is a little bit of a disappointment). I was just Reading an old blog where the writer has mentioned how the soligas, will take you through a lovely 2 hour nature trek. However none of that happened, when we were there. A guy took us walking by road, and had a binoculars, but there was nothing to sight as we were mainly on the road. He got us back quite quickly. He also got us pepper, for which we waited for our 50 rupee change, which we never got back, though he promised he would come back with the money. Maybe he assumed its for him. Though we did not mind, I thought he could have at least gestured to give it back So I was quite surprised to read this blog, which states - "However, I must add that long forest trek with Soligas more than makes up for the limited 2 hour morning and 2 hour evening safari ride by gypsy". Nor was our safari 2 hours long, nor was there any forest trek with soligas. They just took us to a manicured hut complex and walked us through it and came back.
The hotel outlook on arrival is good and one feels that one has come to a nice location. welcome drink is served to guests. all the managers of different departments surround you and say hi! you feel elated. the management staff is 20 to 30 years aged. Most of them are trained on soft skills and hence are good in using these attributes than practically ensuring what they try to impress. catering section is not up to expectations. there is no senior manager who can handle and interact with guests. the staff is inadequately experienced and trained to give a feeling of comfortable stay at the end. Charges are exorbitant vis-a-vis comforts in all aspects as a overhaul assessment. The hotel is about two months old and i happened to be 6th guest there.
Gorukana is tucked away from the hustle bustle of the town and in the dense B R Hills forest range, just .5 kms away rom the popular B R Temple, once a terittory frequented by the brigand verappan. The resort is admist lush greenary and densely grown trees. The rooms are placed atleast 20 - 30 ft each other on the slope of a small hill overlooking a small man made lake. The rooms are spacious and privacy is at it\'s best. The rooms are set in a perfect environment to enjoy nature and it;s gifts. Be it a chirping of a bird or a small breeze blowing across from the lush green forests of B R Hills. The property has a decent indoor play area, a scenic cafeteria, a spa and a small open air theatre for tribal cultural activities. The B R Hills tiger reserve is 18kms from the resort. Over all if you are a nature lover and want to enjoy the peace and tranquility of nature, nothing better than Gorukana. The owner of this resort Dr Sudarshan has done extensive efforts to help and rehabilitate the Soligas tribe, you get to visit some of their rehabilitation centres, hospitals, schools , etc. A wonderful experience not to be missed. The food is not so upto the mark given the expensive rates, except for the food, rest all was upto the mark and it makes u feel a perfect holiday
very very good, excellent hospitality and service.Nature experience is superb
This place is around 4. 30 hours from Bangalore with breakfast and couple of nature breaks. You can either take the Mysore road or Kankapura road. I suggest the Kanakapura road which mostly deserted after kanakapura. En-route you can visit the two falls Gagana Chukki and Bara Chukki On the negative side the property is not deep in the woods like some jungle lodges property but only 300 meters from the main road. It is on a plantation so there is a lot of greenery. Accommodation is in tent, tree house( bathroom outside) or cottages. We chose cottages. It can easily accommodate four adults as it has a loft that can sleep two. Property is quite peaceful but can get boring beyond a day as there is nothing to do. Property itself is not very big but maintained Service was excellent. It being a weekday when we visited we were only two families on the property and got royal treatment. Food was good and served hot All in all a good place to unwind just wish the property was deeper in the woods.
